I found them unnecessary so I removed them with css.

If I knew i could edit the code and have it be upgrade proof i would have put them next to 'Home' an 'Favorites' on the top

Not necessarily the same but have you looked at the user preferences (user icon)-Home Screen "My Media (small)"?

 

And no it is will not be future proof editing code as that entire folder get replaced with every server update.

Leveraging the initial image, can you use CSS to add links on the same line (tiled) where Home and Favorites are?
