spacecowboy2050 0 Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 I've just moved over to Emby from Plex so am just finding my way around. My question is this - There is a particular TV programme that I like to record and keep a copy of on my PC (not sharing with anyone else!) and up until now I was recording it on my Sky box and using an Elgato capture card to make my own copy. Is it possible to do this with Emby or will the file be protected in some way? I know I need a TV card or similar to do this and was looking at this https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Set-top-Boxes/Silicondust-HDHR5-2DT-HDHomeRun-CONNECT-Tuner/B07BFNRGN9 and connecting it to my network (not directly to the PC as there is no TV aerial in that room). So basically I want to record this programme and keep my own mp4 copy on my PC to watch in emby and to store on the HD (no encryption) for future use. Can anyone advise please? Thanks!
mastrmind11 722 Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Depends on whether the channel is encrypted by your provider. If you shared the channel, I'm sure someone here will be able to confirm whether it's encrypted. If it's not, then yes, emby and the hdhomerun product will do what you want.
spacecowboy2050 0 Posted September 25, 2019 Author Posted September 25, 2019 Thanks for the reply. It’s a series on BBC4HD
mastrmind11 722 Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Pretty sure thats a standard channel and won't be encrypted, but I'll let someone from over there confirm that for you.
spacecowboy2050 0 Posted September 25, 2019 Author Posted September 25, 2019 Thanks for the reply. If I use something like the HDHomerun only connected via a network rather than directly to the PC, will I get artefacts or poor quality recordings? All of my network is wired and performs well but I really want to make sure I get quality recordings that are pretty indistinguishable from the broadcast original. Thanks!

Thanks! depends on your network and the quality of the feed coming from your provider, but i'm all hard wired and it works great. pick one up, grab a month of emby for $5 or whatever it is, and give it a try. worst case, return the hdhomerun.
