Never seen direct play

I've played like 40 videos and never seen it say 'direct play'.

Does this even happen on emby?

Hi there, did you explore the server dashboard during video playback to learn why it transcoding? Or did you explore the stats feature in the video player to learn why it was transcoding?

Hi.  I moved this to the general server support forum because it wasn't clear yet which app or platform you are using but it is a question for server support as opposed to discussion about hardware.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with it but I added my rclone mount to ‘network path’ in addition to my mergerfs main directory mounts and now I get ‘direct streams’

Hi.  Browsers are fairly limited video players but the dashboard will tell you exactly what is being converted and why.
