Help with naming TV shows? Two versions

Hey all, wondering if I could get some help. I have two copies of Yugioh Duel Monsters, one with Japanese audio one with English. I cannot mux to dual audio due to differences in time and censorship by 4Kids. So I have the entire show twice in two files for each episode. Now they have different names and I'm trying to preserve that but if I do "1x01 - dub - Title" and "1x01 - sub - Title" I would figure that dub being alphabetically before sub would make it the default on all episodes but it doesn't. Plenty of them make sub default, and it's a mix, so beyond making two entirely separate directories at the TV Show level, I'm not sure what else to try. I've also tried "Title.sub.ext" "Title - sub.ext" It's just a crapshoot as to what will be default.

Yes I went there first. That is what prompted me to put dub and sub at the beginning. Problem is, it's not consistent with the naming convention.

The algorithm for selecting the default version is based on selecting the best one that guarantees direct playback, but if both versions are similar, I don't know what criteria are used to select the default version. In that case, I think the first one that has been added to the library is the one selected by default. @@Luke Can you confirm which version is selected by default when both can be played directly?

I found that using the square brackets worked well when titling the files:

 

Battlestar Galactica S03E09 [standard]

Battlestar Galactica S03E09 [Extended]

 

This showed up in the catalog under that episode as having two options for playback.  You could do the same for Japanese and English.

The problem is if both files are equally efficient at playback (same container, video codec, audio codec, bitrate...) which one is chosen as default?

^ This. Even name does not help, I have it set up as sub and dub so one would assume that D takes precedence over S alphabetically, but as my attachments above show, it legit has dub as preferred in one episode and sub in another.

The naming will not impact which one is selected by default. The default is chosen based on which one will be most efficient, taking all possible app and server settings into account.

I legit don't know what the **** to do for this show, now all seasons are naming episodes based on the S01 names. S01E01 Terrifying Blue Eyes White Dragon, S02E01 Terrifying Blue Eyes White Dragon. F*** all. I even went from naming 0x01 - name to Show - S01E01 - Name 1 based on this wiki: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159110-tv-naming

Emby currently has no such default version on TV or Movies when it comes to multi-version.  You have to choose and that will be a pain as you can not autoplay next episode as you will probably not get the version you want.

 

So until there is a option in place Default does not exist in terms of multi-version items.

I was kind of wondering about something similar for the Original Star Trek Series. I ripped from BR and each episode has the original and one with redone special effects. So I'd like to be able to watch, and autoplay, either the original or the enhanced. I guess from the above its just not possible, or would it work with seperate folders somehow.

If they are merged into a multiversion presentation, there client picks the version as there is no such thing a Default right now.

 

From a separate folder layout ie it appears twice in Emby, that folder item will be played.

It does not. That is what I had before. Season 1/DUB/1x01 - title until all five seasons showed the names of the season 1 episodes. I just moved all the files out, locked metadata, then moved back in. Now it shows dub and sub as individual files but that is it. No descriptions or anything and it's about the best we're going to get because if you put them named like the wiki says 'Yugioh - 1x01 - DUB title' then you cannot just watch the show it mixes dub/sub with no rhyme or reason.

Basically you would need a dubbed library and none dubbed library.  As there is currently no default version in Emby.  The client/app will automatically choose the version it likes best.

Yeah I tried this too would not grab metadata for the second. That folder structure DID work for s01 it just kept multiplying S01 titles to all seasons.

To answer your first question, this show was heavily censored in the US, so the video tracks and even time frame are two different items in most episodes. Believe me I wish it was that easy...

 

To your second point. I guess I'll try brackets, maybe putting it only on one will resolve because I'm pretty sure I had (DUB) and (SUB) suffixes at one point.

 

EDIT wait that won't work because of the different titles.

EDIT well I guess it's worth a shot, been dealing with this show for several years now might as well try.

EDIT renaming like you have as Title NUM [DUB] and nothing after the NUM on sub doesn't resolve either.

I tested this creating a Spanish version of a show so I had:

I reproduced your issue.  The problem is the version picker dropdown alphabetizes the list by title.  Your titles vary for the same episode so you're never going to get the results you want.  You have two options.

1. Standardize your titles to either the English episode name or the English translation of the Japanese episode name.  If the SUB and DUB versions have the same name, other than the version string after the hyphen then this wouldn't be an issue.
   
   Note that removing the title from your file names would also work.  Then the version picker dropdown shows something like S01E01 SUB and S01E01 DUB and the order is consistent as in my earlier test.
    
2. Submit a feature request to change the existing client behavior.  You'd need to request that the version picker drop-down should be alphabetical but only sort on the text after the hyphen that denotes the version description.

While this is commonly so, there are major examples which (as the OP has explained) were censored in the West, so that the soundtracks don't match the same video.  The OP has named one such show; I have at least three others, amounting to well over 100 episodes.  However, multi-versioning isn't necessarily the most convenient way to handle this, as often the censored shows have a different number of episodes (either omitting some, or combining some), so even the episode numbers don't match.  I put them in separate folders myself, and then edit the metadata by hand if necessary.
