Can cast SD TV to chromecast but HD just hangs

Hi,

I'm facing some issues with casting recorded HD TV to Chromecast.  SD TV works fine but anything recorded in HD seems to transcode successfully but never actually starts the stream to the Chromecast.  Recordings are by NPVR but it's a straight TS file from a digital tuner.

I've attached logs showing successful casting of an SD file (How It's Made - Weismann) and an unsuccessful HD file (Have I Got News for You).  Note that it would appear in all cases I've tested to be repeatable across all source media, the only common factor being HD recorded TV.  HD Films in H264 work absolutely fine.

UK has the slightly odd format for audio description which can sometimes cause transcoding (https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2010/06/questions_around_surround_soun.html) but I'm not sure why it's transcoding at all to a 2nd Gen Chromecast?

Please help as I'm currently as sick as a dog and want to watch crappy TV in bed :(

Ta,

Have you tried lowering the Chromecast quality setting?

Yes that fixes it. It seems to top out at 1080p 5Mbps and Auto mode doesn't work at all.

Chromecast is Gen 2 and is 3 feet from a Unifi AC Pro access point (5Ghz, -49dbm) which is hard wired back to the switch and on to the Emby server (Intel 7700k). I would have thought it could manage more than 5Mbps.

Netflix works fine on 1080p.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Netflix works fine on 1080p.

Netflix is not streaming from your personal computer. it's a whole different paradigm. It looks like that is just the highest the environment can handle. It's still 1080p though, right?

Sure 1080p 5Mbps is OK.  I'm just curious why Auto mode isn't working.  Also, if there is an environment issue (i.e. network), I'd like to determine what it is.

What would be typical for a 2nd Gen Chromecast?  This website suggests it should do 8-12Mbps: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/4e92g7/what_is_the_maximum_bitrate_that_plex_chromecast/

Thanks!

PS. Would be nice if Emby did something other than just fail to play the file (e.g. warning message) but maybe there is a technical reason why this isn't possible?
