Top and bottom 3D videos

Hi everyone,

I am trying to convert my 3D movie collection so I can use it with my PS4's VR headset.  Sony requires 3D movies to be in "top / bottom" format rather than side by side.  I have software that will create top / bottom 3D video, but I don't know how to name the files once created.  The format I'm using for the side by side versions is: "filename-3d.hsbs.MP4" but nowhere in the documentation does it explain the filename structure for "top / bottom" iterations of 3D video.

I would be eternally grateful if anyone could advise me as to how I should be naming the files.  Thank you in advance to anyone that can assist!!!

Mine are named filename.3d.htab for top/bottom files.

Hey Gerry,

Just stumble on this thread while looking for a way to watch 3d movie on my PS4 with the PS VR. You say movies must be top bottom for PS VR? Because from what I read elsewhere, it says Side By Side. Do you play them directly through emby in TB and you have them in 3d?

THanks!

Hi Nodiaque,

I have yet to succeed in watching a 3D movie from EMBY onto my PSVR.

The reason I posted this was simply to find out what the naming convention is for "top-bottom" versions of 3D movies vs "side by side" versions.

From the answers I've garnered so far, "movie-3d.hsbs.mkv" would be for "side by side" versions and "movie-3d.htab.mkv" would be for "top-bottom" versions. Then, there's the anaglyph versions which I'm pretty sure have some OTHER naming convention.  Again, from my research, the anaglyph versions, to my understanding are the ones that require the red & blue 3D glasses, and I've never even found one anywhere to try out.  Now, as far as Sony's standard for movies having to be "top-bottom" instead of "side by side", I have yet to succeed in playing one from EMBY onto my PSVR, so I am not sure whether or not it holds true.  It is simply information I've come across in my research to try to make it work.  3D movies need some kind of special application to be played on the PSVR.  As far as I can tell, you need to use an application called "Littlstar", but you need to pay for the application to use its full features, and I am not prepared to pay for it until I know it DOES do what it purports it can.  Apparently you CAN use the free version by using a method called "side-loading", but my attempts to do so failed miserably, hence my hesitation to pay actual money for it.  You can't play 3D movies from EMBY directly to the PS4's "Media Player", as it simply displays 2 side by side iterations of the same movie.  I haven't found any "top-bottom" iterations of any 3D movies to try, so I was going to use a piece of software I found that claims to be able to make 3D movies into whichever iteration required.  So, that, in a nutshell was the entire reason for my post.

Since my original post, I've acquired a DLP projector.  They are ALSO supposed to be able to display 3D movies properly, and I did get "active shutter" 3D glasses to use, but have also yet to succeed in watching a 3D movie projected from EMBY to my projector.  My results so far HAVE been rather frustrating, but at SOME point, I'm sure I'll succeed somehow.  Maybe some kind soul will share THEIR knowledge, and "turn the light on" for both of us!

That is the totality of my research into playing 3D movies without outright having to buy an actual 3D TV, so if anyone else out there has any information that could help, I'm sure I'm not the only one that could benefit from your knowledge.  EMBY is a Godsend for me, and I am eternally grateful to everyone here who has contributed to my EMBY "education" if you will, and at some point, some generous soul will "illuminate" us, and I'm sure I (we) will find the solution to our query!

And if "YOU" should find some answers, please feel free to share it here!!!

Hello,

From what I've gathered across Reddit, LittleStar is the most popular software. It need to have mp4 formatted properly in side by side format to work. Video and Audio Codec are also an issue, and last time I've check, it doesn't support DTS 7.1 or Dolby Atmos 7.1, only 5.1 audio.

Something with emby I've saw, and you might want to look at that when testing, is the transcoding. Emby auto transcode when it think the receiver can't play (I say think because I've getting transcode for no reason on some devices for either audio, video or even unsuported container but I can play directly on them without a problem). This is why I was unable to use the ps4 "app" (more like a webpage then an app), it transcode anything I throw at it. Once you have transcoding, you will loose 3D.

As for 3D convention, there's many and the naming convention is written in the wiki (https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159116-3d-videos). I myself have all 3D MVC movie, thus I'll have to convert them. I might end up just burning them to BR and have them read in my PS4. Other option would to play it on my pc with ps vr connected to it, but my pc isn't powerfull enough for that.

For littlestar, you also have to adjust the filenmae convention to littlestar convention. PS VR, from littlestar, work only with SBS. There's other software that were made that also work with SBS.

My issue for me is that none of them currently have support for HD audio and high quality video. Littlestar seems to be a hit and miss on picture quality and doesn't support HD Audio. It was for a long time only 2.0 audio.
