VPN question

I am thinking about starting to use a VPN (like expressVPN or ProtonVPN) at my house. I have absolutely no experience with VPNs so I am starting to learn about them, but before I get to far I want to make sure that this is going to work with my emby server at my house.

Also if anyone has any advice on using a VPN at home I would appreciate that as well.

Thanks,

Robert

A bunch of us use them. You just have to make sure you can portforward through them. I run mine (Torguard) on pfsense with openvpn. My entire network is behind it, and it works well. But you can run the app, instead. I wrote a guide on it.

I use ExpressVPN on my router for all my devices and I have zero problems with Emby or any other service. However I do NOT use any remote access at all so I cannot attest to that.

There are a few, very few, of the VPN servers that ExpressVPN has that are misdirected by some of the metadata services amd do not work right and there are a couple that ESPN will not work correctly with but, on my router, in is just a matter of a few clicks to switch servers so that is not a problem. FWIW: the main New York server seems to work 100% with every app and service I use. I use a VPN for security and I have not tried to use it to overcome geoblocking or any other limitations.

All VPNs will slow down your internet speed some so the higher you start with the better. On my VPN my speed drops from close to 60 down to 30-35 using the New York servers but that is more than enough for everything I do.

Oh, on ExpressVPN on my router it is very easy to let one or more devices avoid the VPN so any device can access the internet without the VPN is needed.

One more thing: Get a router that you can install the actual ExpressVPN modified DD-Wrt operating system on like the Asus RT-AC87U (which is what I have) With a compatible router it is actually just a few clicks to follow the instructions on the ExpressVPN website to be up and running with full protection quite quickly and easily.

I find ExpressVPN well worth the cost and I feel much more secure with it running.
