bizarro252 17 Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 Emby Server 4.2.1.0 Roku 3.0.175 Watching a movie and the picture will freeze, the audio will continue for 2-5 seconds, then the picture will resume, the audio will jump back to where the picture was and continue playing. So the audio repeats itself while the picture hangs, then resumes. I have checked the (wireless) connection to the roku and its very strong, shows -40dbm and 70-110Mbit connection, so I don't think that's it. Video is also lower bitrate so should not be an issue, has not been before. I saw this on the Roku TV yesterday but only once or twice so figured it was a fluke in the network. Today this video is doing it over and over every few minutes. Attaching emby log and 2 ffmpeg logs as there are several of them timestamped only a minute or two apart so not sure which to choose, all seem to be logs from this movie playing - perhaps ffmpeg is doing something weird as this movie does have to be transcoded. Let me know what ya think... Going to flip over to beta and see if it continues. Thanks! empnewgrv_skipping.txt empnewgrv_skipping_ffmpeg1.txt empnewgrv_skipping_ffmpeg2.txt
speechles 2055 Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 (edited) You may also need to factory reset your Roku. One of the firmware updates Roku made had some changes to the network stack. Some of those were done as patches that may not have installed correctly on some Roku devices. The only way to fix this might be to factory reset which will build your Roku from pure recovery images. Then it will update over this with proper firmware update instead of patches. You should find the Roku behaves much more stable after factory resetting. Keep in mind factory reset does wipe your Roku registry. All settings for all applications will be lost. You will need to login to every single app all over again. This may or may not solve your problem but chances are this will. This has already helped another fellow on his Roku premier+ 4630 get back on pavement and it can you too. Please let us know if this does not solve your issue. Edited August 27, 2019 by speechles
bizarro252 17 Posted August 27, 2019 Author Posted August 27, 2019 @@Luke Just checked what the other show was I saw this on yesterday and yes, that show is all .avi files as well, so maybe this is contained to that file type. I swapped over to the beta server and changed nothing else, it played fine FYI. @@speechles Thanks, hoping it wont come to that haha, seems like it is related to file type as Luke was asking about, will keep this option in my pocket however thank you.
bizarro252 17 Posted August 29, 2019 Author Posted August 29, 2019 Hi @@Luke Watching in the server GUI while playing this same file again today to see what it was doing, very weird behavior - it will start off transcoding and show the details but it will flip over to showing "direct playing" and then back to transcoding. It seems to skip while this flipping back and forth is happening (picture freezes, audio continues, picture unfreezes but is then out of sync with audio for a bit before it all syncs back up). Perhaps this helps, seems to be specific to .avi and seems to be related to the server not transcoding correctly/consistently. I can reproduce this easily so let me know if you need anything else specific. This is on stable 4.2.1.0 Thanks!
bizarro252 17 Posted September 1, 2019 Author Posted September 1, 2019 Just to update, this is also happening on other shows/movies that are .avi files - has not happened on any other format of video.
Luke 42077 Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Can you try to play the same .avi file in the Emby web app? How does that compare?
bizarro252 17 Posted September 3, 2019 Author Posted September 3, 2019 Hi Luke, Just checked, I played in the web app just fine, also behavior within the server admin GUI was also 'normal' showing that it is transcoding, not bouncing back and forth between transcoding and direct playing like it does when streaming to Roku, Thanks
speechles 2055 Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 What does stats for nerds say while the Roku is playing? That will show what is actually happening. It should not create individual sessions when it does playback recovery. It should kill the old session and respawn the same identical session with new media playing. It sends the appropriate signals to the server. But maybe it is confuse the audio? Maybe the audio is where the confusion lies possibly? Does stats for nerds say the video is direct streaming but the audio is transcoding possibly?
bizarro252 17 Posted September 3, 2019 Author Posted September 3, 2019 (edited) @speechless, here you go, caught it on video. I apologize in advance for my noobish vertical recording... EDIT: Cant attach video, link here https://vimeo.com/357466353 Edited September 3, 2019 by bizarro252
bizarro252 17 Posted September 13, 2019 Author Posted September 13, 2019 Hello @@Luke and @@speechles Have you had a chance to review that example? Thank you
speechles 2055 Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 (edited) It looks like the video is transcoding according to the stats for nerds. The bitrate at first jumps around. The transcoding progress never grows. The odd part is right before your loop back it appears the transcoding information stops being part of the session information. That is why transcoding progress suddenly jumps to 100% as the other transcoding fields go blank. The app believes when this happens transcoding is complete because it has stopped. @@Luke Do you know what causes this? Edited September 13, 2019 by speechles
