Can I move playlists from one server to another?

I am in the process of moving from my old Windows based Emby server to a Ubuntu based Emby server. I already use the backup plugin to backup my Emby server regularly and when I restored the backup to the Ubuntu Emby install, my playlists were missing. I am assuming the backup plugin just does not backup playlists. So I would like to transfer all of my Playlists from the old server to the new one, is there a way I can do that? Or am I stuck rebuilding all of my playlists from scratch?

Since you are changing OSes I can assume the item path will be different.  So if so you would have to manually change the item path in every Emby created playlist.  But you can verify by looking in your playlists in your backup folder location.

example from a test playlist.

  <PlaylistItems>
    <PlaylistItem>
      <Path>C:\Users\Media\Desktop\Videos\Movies - nfo\2 fast 2 furious\2 fast 2 furious.disc</Path>
    </PlaylistItem>
  </PlaylistItems>

Yeah, I had a feeling I'd have to manually edit each playlist, but I'm ok with that. Find/Replace All should make that a quick job. So I dug around in Ubuntu and found my playlists all stored here:

/var/lib/emby/data/playlists

So if I go through and fix the paths for all of the entries should the playlists then show up in Emby again?

They should but am not positive if you will have to make another playlist to force the update or not.  I know in 4.3 Playlists are now a library via dashboard-library and you can just do a refresh.

With a quick look at my stable version looks like you can use multi-select the do a Refresh metadata on the Playlist library on Home Screen.

Ok, I'll try that and see how it goes.

I hate reviving old threads, but I need help with migrating playlists to a new server. And this thread is relevant.

My old server and the new server both use FreeNAS for the media, so I do not need to change any paths in the playlist files.

Some of the user names are different on the two servers but some exist in both and have playlists.

I have a playlist section in the old server library but it does not appear in the new server. I have scanned the entire library.

I had to recreate every library in the new server even though I did a restore from the configuration backup.

I looked at the Playlist - Manual Migration Wiki, but that only explains about the paths and I do not need to change that in the playlist files.

My issue is there is no way to just create a Playlist library entry. So how do I move the playlists to the new server and assign them to the correct users?

Have you tried creating a new playlist to get the library to appear?

Yes, Created a new playlist with a dummy song, then overwrote with old playlist and refresh metadata. Point is, should be easier than that.

Since collections and playlists libraries are not created until first item is created, I can see how this could be a issue.

I will comment in the plugin issue as this could be a issue in the restore as you technically can not create these two libraries.

Having to create the playlist manually first. That's about the only thing we could add to the knowledge base.

But then it's not really a migration.  This is a bit different with different users, etc.

Same principles involved but you have to think outside the box a bit like creating a playlist then replacing it.

Add that to the Wiki along with the collections restore. Both were a challenge to figure out. I think a restore should create a playlist and collections library if one already existed.

They do restore both playlists and collections libraries if the restore defect gets fixed.  But my work around works fine in my restore for both libraries.  But still have to migrate some things manually.
