Date added behavior for new content

Hello,

I categorize my newest movies in a New Releases section in my library and then after a couple months I move those movies into separate categories such has Blu-Ray Sets, Blu-Ray Movies, Animation Movies. When I move the movies to these categories they do not re-appear as newly added.

I'd like to ask to have an option in the Date added behavior for new content section that allows you to "Use Date added to folder" or something that would flag it that those moves has been moved and are "new" to those categories.

Thank you

I think three options here would be a little too complex.

How do you have the date added behavior option set now?

Hello,

I've tried both options listed and neither work when I move my movies to their new folders.

Originally was set to use file creation date, but I changed it to use Date Scanned into Library. This option should be changed from library to folder so that when you move the movies it recognizes it as new to the folder.

From an existing metadata/nfo/xml standpoint this never changes from the original import/metadata file creation.  From a database metadata only standpoint it would change every time the item is moved as it item/itemid gets removed from the database and a new itemid is generated as the file is consider new in the new location.

Do you have nfo files? And if so, have you examined the contents? The help text underneath the option explains this. I think it is working just fine.

Yes, but the NFO files only show when the file was created and details on the movie. I don't see how the NFO files play a part in recognizing the movie is new to that folder? I looked in the help section and found nothing that talks about NFO files.

It's not working fine, because if it was when I move a movie from my new releases to the final destination folder it doesn't recognize it as new to that folder. I don't know why this would be an issue to correct or enable.

My suggestion for your situation would be to use the file creation date option and then use a simple utility to "touch" the file when you move it.

What are the contents of the nfo file?

As already stated EXISTING metadata will take priority.  If you move media with nfo metadata you have to delete that file so it gets recreated or Emby will reuse the existing dateadded in new location.   So the only way for a OLD file to become NEW is to remove existing metadata.  But Watched status are tracked by providerid (imdb, tmdb, tvdb) so the item many be new when moved but will still be watched if it has already been watched.

If you do not use local metadata/metadata with media then the file is new every time it is moved as it is removed from the database and re-added.

I'll just manually move them off my server and then back to the new folders and see if that helps. It will be more work since Emby is limited in it's ability to accomplish this task like other media server/players.

Thanks

or you can remove the existing nfo files as previously suggested a couple times.

Limited how? We're trying to explain to you how this works. Can you please provide the contents of one of your nfo files? Thanks.

Please see the attached nfo file. Limited because I don't have to do anything with nfo files with my other media server when I move my movies to the new folders.

Notice how this nfo file has dateadded:

<dateadded>2019-08-09</dateadded>

If the date added value exists in the nfo file then this always gets priority. The help text under the setting explains this. Does this answer your question now? The nfo file is your personal metadata, all we're doing is using it.

I don't have to do anything with nfo files with my other media server

Because the other media server by default will ignore your nfo files, but we will read them if they are there. Are you saying you'd rather just have us ignore your metadata? And if so, then why do you have the nfo files in the first place?

And to clarify you "don't have to do anything with nfo" if you don't want to. Emby will only save them if you enable it, and it's off by default.
