Emby Server is Direct Streaming if user transcoding is disabled and video bitrate exceeds client bitrate

If a user has "Allow video transcoding" disabled, and the movie bitrate exceeds the client bitrate limit setting instead of not playing the movie, Emby Server is Direct Streaming the movie instead!!!

 

It sort of defeats the whole purpose of a streaming bitrate limit setting if the server keeps playing the movie when it exceeds the clients limits.

I'm using my Android Emby Client on my phone over LTE connected to my Emby Server trying to play a movie with a bitrate of 8.3mpbs.

My Internet streaming bitrate is set at 6.5mpbs so it shouldn't play without it being transcoded.

 

In the first attempt to play the movie I have "Allow Video Transcoding" disabled.

When I play the movie it works (even though it shouldn't) but it gets Directed Streamed.

 

In my second attempt I disabled "Allow video playback that requires conversion without re-encoding".

When I try to play the movie I just get a spinning indicator, no error messages at all!

I didn't expect it would work but an error message would be helpful.

I can see why this would happen, yes. Although since you have allowed remixing, we could actually play it with audio only.

Not sure what you mean by only implemented, but you have to be able to transcode video in order to change quality.

There is a issue somewhere as Chrome is playing media that is over bitrate with no audio as it is ac3.

That's expected behavior if you are only using the in-app quality setting. Failures are the last resort when there is no other way to play.

 

The only time this playback would be rejected is if you were remote and the server had a remote bitrate limit applied.

But why is it not failing for ac3 on Chrome?  No audio is being played.

The video player won't always trigger an error. Sometimes it will just play video without audio, or vice versa.
