Reading this again, it appears as though downmixing is isn't being done correctly. What audio options does your TV have?

 

Does it have an option to process the sound to a pseudo surround sound? What is your TV doing with your audio?

But I found another AC3 media file in my library, which plays fine

My TV's sound setting are:

 

Dual Sound: Stereo

Speakers: TV Speakers

 

Sound Mode: [standard]: Optimises sound quality for general content. 

Sound Booster On

Advanced Auto Volume Off

 

I dont see any setting that appears to be upmixing the surround sound

Well, if other similar audio plays correctly, I'm wondering if the channel arrangement it wrong. I have an anime like that. The voice is on the front right channel etc. I keep meaning to fix it, but I forget about it. Can you share the file?

The strange thing is when transcoding is downmixed fine, so channel arrangement should be ok. We definitely need a sample to take a look.

Yeah, it's a weird one. But if the channels are wrong, depending on how it's downmixed, it could omit some channels and give the output he's describing. He has sound, but it's the wrong sound.

I think I see the problem. The file header is saying that the audio is only 2 channel AC3, but ffprobe is reading the actual media correctly as 6 channels. There might be a simple fix.....

Yeah, that's the problem. If I leave the audio set to auto, it plays correctly. But If i set it downmix to stereo, you only get the extraneous audio.

Unfortunately, the info is embedded, and I haven't found a way to correct it

Someone with good knowledge of ffmpeg could probably give you a command line that would decode and re-encode it. I can do that in mpv, on playback.
