I am trying to play an epsiode but it does not play the soundstream with the voices, so I hear only background sounds and sometimes secondary voices.

(logs are attached, i started playing the file at 2019-07-27 20:52:22.098)

What I tried:

- playing other media files is no problem

- playing this specific episode on other clients (webclient, android phone and ios)

- restarting the server and the client does not solve the issue

- I updated to the latest version of emby server 4.2.0.40

(sorry meant to edit the title to a more meaningful title, but I think I cannot edit the post title)

Hi there, have you configured any audio settings in the app? Have you configured audio settings in the device settings?

Posted

nothing special, what sort of settings are you refering to?

Posted

Hi.  For instance, it is possible to configure your Shield to always pass thru audio even if the system says it doesn't support it.  What it sounds like is happening is that 5.1 audio is being sent to a 2.0 only capable system.

Is there a receiver involved?

What is the device's audio setting set to?

Posted

No I don't have a receiver. The Shield is directly connected to my TV

Posted

Go into the app playback settings and select "Downmix to stereo" in the audio option and see if that makes a difference.

Posted

Nope, still the same.

strange thing is that with the English subtitles enabled I do get all the audiostreams

Maybe when you enable subtitles is transcoding and when direct playing your tv doesn’t support that codec. This happened to me with one 7.1 audio track unsupported by my system, I had to force trancode or select another track. The issue if your system doesn’t support that audio track, audio should be transcoded. Which codec is that audio track?

Can you try forcing transcoding?

I you don’t need surround sound, you can disable it in Nvidia Shield audio settings. Then audio is downmixed to stereo.

@@ebr Is there any difference if you downmix at app level or at nvidia shield level? This is a question I’ve always asked myself, now it’s a good time to ask you.

Hi.  What version of the app are you running and what was the answer to this question?

What is the device's audio setting set to?

I never really changed any of the audio settings of the Shield:

"Stereo upmix" is off

"Fixed volume" is off

"play comfort noise" is on

"usb audio mode" is high quality mode

And I am am using emby client version 1.7.40g

@@vdatanet

transcoding indeed does work

the audio codec is: Dolby (direct) 5.1 audio channels

And Surround Mode? You can set: Automatic, Always, Never. Try to set Never. This will downmix to Stereo.

Can you post the transcoding log?

I did not see where you stated which version of the Emby app you are using but, if it is before 1.7.23a then the problem could be the same as I reported in this thread in the beta forum:https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/72875-no-dialog-audio-on-some-files/

It also could be that, even if you have a later version, that the bug I reported has crept back into the code or that the fix did not fix all possible variations of the bug.

Admittedly the problem I had was on my Fire TV, not my Shield, and my Shield played the files fine at the time so the bugs may be unrelated but the operating systems are almost the same and the bugs can be related. I, now, almost never use my Shield or my Fire because Emby has fixed in their beta all the weaknesses that were in the Roku so I now use my Roku Ultras for almost all my Emby streaming.

I simply like the Roku Ultra's operating system and user interface a LOT better than any Android style system. So I primarily use the Roku.

It should be noted that when I had the audio problem on my Fire TV neither my Ultra or my Shield had any isue at all.

No, that's not the problem on this platform.

The answer to this question is key...

Surround mode is set to Never

Try automatic.  And also set the app audio setting to Auto.

Posted

I set the Surround setting on my Shield to auto and also in the Emby app I set it to auto, but the issue remained.

Here are the transcoding logs when playing this file

The problem is now occurring when the item is remuxing?

We are sending 5.1 AAC to your receiver.  Perhaps it doesn't support this.

I think he says when transcoding plays fine, the problem is with direct play. Maybe his TV doesn't support AC3 5.1, if that's the case audio should be transcoded. Can you post your TV model?

I have an old TV in my bedroom with this problem (doesn't support AC3 5.1), but setting surround mode to "Never" in the shield solves the issue.

I have a Sony bravia 42w805a.

Is there any way to search in emby for other ac3 content?

Apologies, haven't really read this thread, but do you mean something like this ? This is in Chrome though.

That's not a good idea. There're many that don't support AAC. You should send PCM audio. Or 2 channel AC3 384

Is sending AAC when transcoding, in this situation audio is Ok. The problem is when audio AC3 5.1 is sended direct play and then there's no audio. It's strange because the TV supports AC3, maybe only two channel. But in this situation when Nvidia Shield downmixes to stereo, audio should be ok.

What is the audio bitrate?
