Hi, I have been unable to start my embyserver after failing an update. Here is my relevant embyserver log

2019-07-26 20:46:06.666 Info Main: Application path: F:\Niche Apps\Emby\system.old\EmbyServer.dll
2019-07-26 20:46:07.203 Info Main: An update is available from F:\Niche Apps\Emby\programdata\updates\embyserver-win-x64-{version}.7z
2019-07-26 20:46:07.449 Info Main: Copying updater to temporary location
2019-07-26 20:46:38.045 Info Main: C:\Users\Magik\AppData\Local\Temp\emby-server-updater\Emby.Server.Updater "F:\Niche Apps\Emby\programdata\updates\embyserver-win-x64-{version}.7z" "F:\Niche Apps\Emby\system.old" "F:\Niche Apps\Emby\programdata\cache\temp\b53d3cce-ea18-4ba5-a991-6263ec38cb31" "F:\Niche Apps\Emby\programdata\logs"
2019-07-26 20:46:38.307 Info Main: Exiting to perform application update.

Here is the updater.txt that takes place after it tried to install the update

Error performing update. Source and destination path must be different.    at System.IO.Directory.Move(String sourceDirName, String destDirName)
   at Emby.Server.Updater.Updater.<>c__DisplayClass2_0.<ExtractPackage>b__0()
   at Emby.Server.Updater.Updater.DoWithRetry(Action action)
at Emby.Server.Updater.Updater.ExtractPackage(String archive, String systemDir, String backupDir)
   at Emby.Server.Updater.Program.Main(String[] args)

It seems like it does not know where to install the new update, is there anyway i can guide it on its path?

Hi there, I would suggest shutting down the server and installing the latest version manually from the website. Looks like you are running the portable install, so you can just unzip it over the top.

So I installed the latest emby version and copied the folders "programdata" and "system" and pasted them over the in the old emby folder and that seemed to allow me to run the emby server again, however I no longer have my old users, it seems like a fresh install. I did backup the folder before I copied over it. Is this what you meant by unzipping it over the old server? If so is there a way i can get my old users and data back from the backup folder i made?

What version did you have before?

What version did you have before?

4.1.1.0 according to a log on the 23rd. Updated to 4.2.0.40 now.

It sounds to me like you didn't unzip to the right place. Are you sure you actually overwrote your current embyserver.exe?

Make sure to also delete this updates folder:

F:\Niche Apps\Emby\programdata\updates

Fairly certain. I ran my emby server on an external harddrive with the disk letter F:/ as seen in the emby log. When I ran the latest emby setup file it installed to my C drive. I copied the "programdata" and "system" from my C drive and moved it to the external on the F drive.

Ok that's not the way the portable install works. The way it works is we have a dedicated download on the windows download page for this:

https://emby.media/windows-server.html

Okay I'll give it a try. It'll probably take a few minutes to restore my backup first.

Great, thanks, let us know how you get on. I would restore, then unzip the portable download over the top.

When you're back up and running, you may want to just go ahead and disable automatic updates. It will still notify you when an update is available.
