LAN IP Changes after server restart

Hey guys, not sure if this is intended but when ever I restart my emby server the LAN IP changes and makes the WAN Access unaccesable because the IP used while portforwading is the IP before restarting the server.

When you restart the physical server you are getting a new DHCP IP assignment from your (assuming) router. You need to either set a fixed IP on that box so it's not receiving an auto assigned IP via DHCP or set a static lease in your DHCP scope so it gets the same IP every time it asks for one. This is normally done by choosing the machine via its MAC address and then telling your router to always give it the same IP (of your choosing).

That's not strictly true. Mine never changes and it isn't static. Even if I reinstall the OS, my LAN IP doesn't change.

Is your WAN IP changing?

Doofus the wan ip is not changing, but his local server address is and this requires him to redo his port forwarding setup before he can access remotely again.

@@pgriffith is correct. Configuring a static IP for your server machine will resolve this. This is not an emby problem.

Well, I suppose if it's a crappy router???? I've never had that happen with any router I've used. The only way I see that happening is if the server machine is off long enough that the router assigns the IP to another device or simply deactivates it and then assigns a new one when the machine is active again. Either way, it that's what's happening, it's bizarre!

And he hasn't specified what is happening with the WAN IP. I wasn't going to assume...

Some routers will automatically try to re-assign the same IP address to the same machine when it keeps requesting via DHCP so, yes, it could depend on the router.

Still the advice in here is correct - you need to be sure your server always has the same address and this is not an Emby issue but, rather, a network setup one.

There are usually two ways to ensure the machine gets the same address:

1) Setup a static IP (specifying it explicitly in network configuration instead of using DHCP)

2) Create a "reserved" IP in your DHCP server (router) so the machine is always assigned the same one.

The first is preferable because it will always work as expected.

My VPN did not (at least not a few years ago) take kindly to my server having a static IP.  The VPN worked great with DHCP.  So i just went in to the router and reserved one of my DHCP pool numbers for the MAC address of my server.  Although i do not use that VPN any longer i have left my server configured this way (DHCP) for years without issue.

The information provided from @@pgriffith and @@ebr is spot on.

Hi, I also have this problem, more or less. My WAN IP changes, but not every time I restart server or PC, only some times. How is it?

Hi, this is probably more of a question for your ISP, right?

Mmmm, you could be right... I used to access server from the official app, that always connects. I started accessing server on Symphony, and then was when I lost the connection to library and noticed the server changes, and thought it was some Emby thing, but yes, sounds like ISP.

Thanks!

Perhaps a ddns would help you manage the ip address changes?
