Embycon error in startup

I'm having a strange issue where intermittently, I'm getting an embycon error on startup, which renders embycon unusable unless I kill Kodi and restart it on my shield.

 

This error doesn't happen every time, but it's starting to happen more frequently (maybe every 1 in 3 times I start Kodi or more).

This happened on at least 1 other shield at a different location (one I manage for a friend), as well as on a Minix box running coreelec, which is at my house).
