Issues with transcoding HEVC on some clients recently

Recommended Posts

I have a number of 4k HEVC files which are seemingly suddenly no longer able to play on several clients which cannot natively play HEVC.

This requires pretty heavy transcoding, which worked fine last week, but not anymore now. I have not changed anything that I am aware of. Clients tried: Apple TV (non-4k) and Chrome browser. The files play fine in Emby Theater direct play.

Debug log:

Any idea?

Nothing has changed in 4.1.1.0 in that time frame as it was released April 29.  Unless you just updated in the last week.

(Over night I ended up having a large amount of logs written, as one client keeps trying to load a file and transcode which then fails.)

When the client's bitrate is set sufficiently low, it seems to play OK.

@@joydashy have you tried restarting your machine and making sure your video drivers are up to date? Unfortunately there's nothing obvious i can say here, other than it looks like your server just can't transcode this quickly enough to be playable.

Do you mean the server? Certainly have rebooted it yes, no effect. And I have tried several clients now. I am using software transcoding, but the server is powerful enough, and it worked previously :(

Anything else I could try/debug?

Has anything on your server machine changed?

Thanks for stating this again, of course this was the first thing I've been breaking my head over. Decided to go through everything again. Had recently lowered the resource settings for this LXC within Proxmox. Seems Emby container allocates a large amount of memory upon start of transcoding, it was reaching this cap.

Would be cool if this could somehow be detected and logged in the server log, but not sure if possible?

Regardless, thanks for the support!
