720p vs 480p bandwidth

When streaming over mobile is there a difference between the bandwidth of a 720p vs 480p steam if they are both at 1mbps?

 

Just trying to understand if resolution matters or is it all about bandwidth?

 

Same could be said for 720 vs 1080 @ 4mbps.

Nope the bitrate is the bandwidth requirement. You may have inadequate bitrate for a given resolution resulting in a decrease in visual quality.

 

For example I would prefer 4Mbps at 720p over 4Mbps at 1080p as I find that 4Mbps is insufficient for 1080p h264 encoded video. Others may disagree, but I notice compression artifacts during dark and high motion scenes.

Good to know thanks. Honestly this is on a phone a few feet away. I can't tell a difference between 480 and 720 at that point. I just want it to work in low cell areas.

 

But if it's the same I'll jump to 720. Thanks for the quick response.
