moviepalace4K 29 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Hello, I actually wonder what the best DVD rip setting is for Emby to avoid the transcoding process as much as possible. I Currently rip DVDs (480p) to BluRay (720p). This will appear on my HDD as: title.year.BluRay.720p.x264.mp4. And yet these files are converted. So what is the best setting to avoid transcoding? Greetings Patrick
BAlGaInTl 288 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 I think that will largely depend on what clients you are using to view them. You want to rip to a format that is compatible. What are you using for viewing?
moviepalace4K 29 Posted June 21, 2019 Author Posted June 21, 2019 We using Chromecast, AndroidTv an Windows Theatre
BAlGaInTl 288 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 I would think that all of those devices would handle 720p h264 rips. Why are you ripping something that is 480p to 720p though? You may need to supply the transcoding logs so that someone that is smart on that can take a look. How to Report a Problem
RanmaCanada 496 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Best way to avoid transcoding is to ensure all your devices can direct play everything. Worst case scenario, use kodi as an external player as it will get the odd codec that the built in player says your device can't handle. As for what you are doing, upscaling stuff that was never properly remastered, it's a bad idea as all you will do is introduce noise and bloat. Unless English is not your first language and what you mean is you are ripping blurays ONLY to 720p. For bluray I would recommend CRF 18-20 in x264, and for SD stuff, CRF 14-16, or even just remux (quite possibly requiring you to use Kodi as an external player) it as smaller resolution items are more prone to pixelization when blown up to fit your display so encoding errors and faults will be far more noticeable.
