Good Day...I have a home network and I am having some difficulty in getting a home user get access to Emby. I have a dedicated W10 box for Emby server. I can access the server by every means possible however my user cannot. They get access to the W10 box by using their login creds. Unfortunately, they cannot access Emby and Emby is not showing up in the system tray (yes, Emby server is running). Nor can they find Emby server in the start menu. However, when I log the user out and login as myself, I see Emby in the system tray and start menu. Did I miss something during the install or do I need to run Emby as a service in order for my users to access?

I check the user creds and changed them to administrator but no joy on the access. I opened up port 80 on the machine hosting Emby, no joy on access. I killed the firewall and u guessed it, no joy on accessing Emby. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...Cheers...

Emby runs under the context of one user (the administrator where it is installed), and will not run for other system users.  Sounds like you may want to run Emby as a service

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Running-Emby-Server-as-a-Windows-Service.

Unless you are switching users and leaving your account logged in with Emby running as a application.  Then they will use (localhost:8096) or what ever port you are using.

Thanks for the response Happy. My test user can access their user account if they access using either the 192.168xxxxx or localhost xxxx on the machine it was originally installed from. But when they try to access from a laptop wired into my network, they cannot acces Emby. I was thinking that maybe I need to have Emby run as a service and your rec confirms that. So if I DL the Emby portable version onto the host machine using the test users creds they will be able to acces their Emby account? Is there any downside in using the portable version? Thanks in advance Happy. Cheers...

BTW, the "follow this guide" returned a 503 error.

One other thing Happy...my new HDHR 4 tuner will be here tomorrow. Will I still need to run Emby as a service. What about the option to send an email to the user to accept the connection. Is that still available? TIA Cheers!!

The Portable server is just that another server.  Each server installations is a independent installations and configuration, so all accounts are unique to that installation.  Sound like you have a firewall issue if other systems on your home network can not access the existing Emby server.  So are you saying no devices on your home network can access Emby?

Yup no devices. Will check firewall again. Will kill the FW and check that way first. If I can gain access from the laptop then its a FW issue. NPVR has no trouble with its setup as I can access from the laptop and my phone from outside the house. Will get back to you on this.

I took down the FW and no joy. Still cannot access Emby from using Laptop or PC. So getting back to this Emby service, if it is a seperate and distinct server than the one already on the host machine, that means I would have to move/copy the exixting folders that have my current setup? Maybe its just better that I leave the host machine logged in by me and just let them access Emby that way.

Hello, I believe I got this sorted out for now anyways. I entered tv.emby.media on the laptop and got access as a user from a W10 user account. So I think this will work out. Hopefully, it wasn't a fluke but I will be testing it out fully for a few days. Thanks again. Cheers...

What inbound rules do you have for "Emby Server" in your firewall?

Example from one of my installations Private network allowed. Public network blocked.  So network type will have a factor with connections unless you are allowing both types.

the pop-up during setup, there is a way to do this setup again and can list processes if needed.

I can pm you NSSM is you would like.

@@Luke if NSSM is not going to be available what would another options?

Ahhh, I have the same rules except where yours says system, mine has my name. Maybe that is how/why my user cannot access. So what I should have done was install MB as THE administrator and not as an administrator, yes? If so then I would need to reinstall correct?

edit

Yes I did get the FW questions and answered to allow. But like I said I installed MB under my name as an administrator and not THE administrator.

Mine is actually a portable install but runs under the administrator account on always logged in Media user.  The user account running Emby is not getting logged off correct as that will shut down the server?

Is nssm out of operation? It could just be a temporary problem on their website.

Thank you both. So getting back to the portable install. If I install it under the administrator account would that give access to all users?

What are you trying to accomplish?  Emby is not a All users program only one instance can be run at a time.  It is run by one user and that user needs permissions to the assigned libraries.  I guess you could put a shortcut on other users desktops to launch Emby (did a quick test with a user account that appeared to work) or put portable in a common location.

Hello Happy...Wel since it is a Media Center app, I was under the impression that I could install it on 1 machine and it could be accessed by other users on my home network. Kind of like a real server works. My office applications and npvr and Kodi could all be accessed by others at my home but there was only 1 machine that hosted the application. So is this not the way MB works?? Cheers!!

Yes, Happy please send me the NSSM file as that would help in keeping the app alive 24/7. Thanks in advance...Cheers

Yes Emby Server will present to all Emby clients/apps anywhere assuming there is not something in the environment blocking it.

So it is a matter of figuring out what is blocking clients for accessing Emby on that host machine.

It has been awhile since I have done a setup on a new machine but after looking at the firewall again, do you have rules for Port 8096 and Port 8920 (or your ports if changed)?

I have same connections as you list. I restarted MB several times deleted the library and restarted MB again. After it populated, I tried to access from the laptop and it!! I logged in as a regular user and it allowed me access as well. I think Mb was not running at the time when it failed to be accessed. So all is well for now. Hopefully, it remains this way. Thanks for your assistance and the PM. Cheers!!

Yes it can, but typically on that machine you would not have users logging in and out. If you do have that, then the windows background service might make sense for you.

Thanks Luke for the reply. You are correct in that the Emby host machine sits on a W10 machine and a 2016 WServer machine neither of which is accessed by anyone except for me. The devices that are used by my family are 2 laptops, a W10 machine and our cell phones. I believe what happened earlier is that when I was making edits on the W10 machine I restarted Emby and then logged out thinking that Emby was running. Obviously not. Things look good for now so I hope it stays that way.

I installed Always UP which is similar to NSSm (will uninstall when the trial is over) to see if running MB as a service would provide the peace of mind and make sure that MB is always running. So far so good so I will leave it alone for now and install NSSM in a few weeks. Thanks @@Happy

Tomorrow will be another day of challenges as the HDHR Quatro is arriving so I will be busy setting that up. It will be a nice change to eliminate the internal Hauppauge card and save some resources via an external appliance. I don't really know how well it will integrate with MB but I have been reading a lot about it so hopefully internal network connections continue to work as well as they do now. Thanks again @@Luke for the HDHR referral. Cheers to all!!

Ok so if nobody is accessing the server machine but you, then you might not need to go through the trouble of setting up a windows service.

Very True indeed. I will continue to run as a service for now though. Just want to get this up and going steading enough before the HDHR is injected into the process. Thanks again Luke.
