People Backup and Restore

I had to delete my library and start over from scratch.  My "People" was using the old style named-directory structure.  So, I'm trying to use the People Backup and Restore plugin.

The message I get is "Backup of People unexpectedly aborted" (See attached Log).  The plugin correctly finds my people (this is omitted from the log)--but errors out.  Need to be able to migrate from the old style to the new style.  I see access denied error messages in the log, but don't understand.  Help?

If you want to migrate from old to new, you should use "Restore" and not "Backup"!

Despite this, please enable logging in the plugin and attach a new log here.

Believe it or not, I tried both "Restore" and "Backup"; both resulted in the same error.  And the log I attached was from after I enabled logging in the plugin.  I assume the log is the same as Emby?

I believe you have to have server debug logging enabled also.

Ok.  Trying again with debug logging enabled.  First couple of times I tried, I pointed to a lower-level directory--I realized I should be pointing to the directory containing the "old" persons.  It seems to be failing at the same person.

Have you set a custom metadata path in Emby? I ask, because the next step in the plugin after reading the person.xml would be to create a unique directory under metadata\library and then copy the person images over there.

I guess it's failing right at creating those directories.

Version 1.3.1.0 adds some more logging to prove my assumption.

Ok trying again with updated Plugin.  I'm not sure what the permissions should be.  It looks like it was successful for other People, but is getting hung up all of a sudden?

Was the directory /media/red/filez/Data/metadata/library/9c/9c12cfdd835547ed86172758c636648c created for you?

Is /media/red/filez/Data/People/A/Aoi Miyama/poster.jpg or folder.jpg accessible (file permissions) for your "embysvr" user?

Is the image a hidden file?

No, the oddly named directory was NOT created for me.  And the properly named directory appears to be missing my person's picture though I was certain that person had a picture?  It's not hidden and the permissions seem to be correct.

Additionally some of the properly named folders dont contain a persons.xml file... just a poster.jpg ... not really sure whats up!

Does a folder /media/red/filez/Data/metadata/library/9c exist? If yes, does it have proper file permissions?

That doesn't make any sense to me, because the plugin should only try to create /metadata/library/9c/9c12cfdd835547ed86172758c636648c if any image is found in /People/A/Aoi Miyama

That's normal, because the ability to create a person.xml was deactivated in Emby's metadata xml plugin in 2017 already.

To go on i would simply suggest to delete "Aoi Miyama" in your people folder.

So, there were two problems.  Both the library and metadata directory were owned by red, not emby.  So I recursively chowned both directories and the restore seemed to work.  Not all the pictures "came over" though, I suspect it's because I need to rescan my library and people... but it looks good so far.  I can be happy knowing that most of them came over ... ;-)

Thanks for the help and the update to the plugin which gave more verbose information.

Hi,

on a fresh install what do I put as a path to my people folder? I looked under the metadata folder and cannot find anything for people?

On newer Emby installations the people and artists folder under metadata aren't created anymore. So you can put in any path you want to create backups for the future.

so if I put paths in that section of the plugin I mentioned above emby will then use that path to store artists / actors?

I guess that will be from now on, what about all the people already scanned into the library?

Thank you

It's just a backup! So any customization you've done to metadata or pictures do not get lost after a fresh installation and you have the ability to restore it. Emby itself will still store the metadata to library.db and images to the folder structur of your screenshot above.

You can do the backup on demand or create some triggers inside the task scheduler.

Ah, sorry! I was overthinking it! Thanks for your time, completely understand now! ;-)

The plugin isn't compatible with newer versions of the server. You can use this one instead: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/94263-backup-restore-actors-beta-with-local-or-web-based-restore/

@Lukeit would be good to define a max. server version in the plugin catalogue. Also i don't have the rights to remove something from the catalogue, although i can add new plugins.
