miniliQuid 94 Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 Been having some trouble with subtitles. For who doesn't know, I detest subtitles for all languages I speak decent enough to follow along without them. That said I only use forced subtitles or subtitles for anime shows most of the time. Now with Narcos I keep running into a problem. It has embedded forced subtitles, they are flagged and renamed as such (checked this since I thought it wouldn't be flagged and emby missed it for that reason). Now my settings are on English subs & smart mode since this usually gives English forced subs for foreign parts (which are often embedded), and it plays English subs for my japanese anime shows. For some reason when playing narcos it starts giving Dutch subtitles. Emby hasn't downloaded English subs for the show at all, just Dutch ones which is already a little weird but not too important. However the fact it chooses to go with the Dutch subtitles instead of the forced ones strikes me as weird, it isn't supposed to do this in smart mode right? As I said I checked the forced flag for the files but they are flagged as forced. Checked my settings in emby, even tried picking forced only but didn't help either. Anyone who has seen this behaviour before and can help me pinpoint the cause? So far I haven't got a clue why it is doing this. Thanks in advance! PS: yes I did try turning it off and on again, server & client
Luke 42089 Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !

miniliQuid 94 Posted June 30, 2019 Author Posted June 30, 2019 Sorry for the late reply. Somehow I wasn't able to replicate since that day. Worked fine for the rest of the show. I think I may have been to hasty starting things before the server was done scanning libraries (can this be a cause?). Usually things just didn't play for me if the library wasn't finished scanning, but it's the only thing I can think off... As for the second post, I know smart mode only enables subtitles if the audio language is not English (Default language). So basically this means that when I watch a Japanese show, it activitates the English subtitles for it. When I watch an English show, it gives no subtitles at all. But then shouldn't it activate forced subtitles when the English show has a few foreign parts? It makes no sense to me that it Would suddenly pick Dutch over English... Also think it never did that before, but maybe I just don't remember it correctly.
ginjaninja 605 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 for me smart subtitles are 'smart' enough, if i play media with a foreign audio track, and local subtitles are present, then local subtitles are displayed if i play media with an local audio track, and local forced subtitles are present, then local forced subtitles are displayed, (tested on webclient 4.2.0.25 beta, local language is english) this is is just how the logic should be imo.

I doubt you are reading things correctly, or I am just not posting them correctly. Basically what smart says it does is "Subtitles matching the language preference will be loaded when the audio is in a foreign language". So when my preference says ENGLISH, it should never ever put them on Dutch. Even though Dutch subs are downloaded for every file, it should never be the chosen sub for my personal account. So far it seems to have been a fluke though since I haven't encountered it since that day.

If you enable subs manually, we will re-enable those same subs on subsequent playback.
miniliQuid 94 Posted July 7, 2019 Author Posted July 7, 2019 Well the weird thing was that when I put them on forced for the episode, backed out, and started again it returned to Dutch. That is what got me so confused that day, but since I cannot reproduce it I guess it matters little.
