Emby & VPN

Hi!

I recently switched from using Plex to Emby because of the IPTV I can use with Emby.  I bought the Emby lifetime pass.

I ran a Plex server on my Win 10 PC and now run an Emby server on my Win 10 PC.  With Plex, when I enabled the VPN on my server, remote users could still connect to my Plex server without having to change IP's or do anything.  They were able to just login like normal without even knowing the VPN was on or off.

With Emby, when I enable my server VPN, the remote users can see the server but it won't connect.  I've also tried using Emby Connect and it still finds the server but won't connect to it.

Is there something I might be overlooking?

With the VPN disabled, can you connect?

Yes sir.  Everything works great for remote users until I enable the VPN.

I am using the PPTP VPN protocol and I do have my LAN address of the server forwarded on the router using port 8096.

What does canyouseeme tell you?

And do you have automatic port mapping enabled, on the server?

Is auto port mapping something I enable on my router or Emby server?

It's enabled in the server, in the advanced section. If it's enabled, try disabling it.

I disabled auto port mapping in the Emby advanced settings and I see my VPN IP and canyouseeme and it says "I can see your service on port 8096".  Now I can connect remotely!

The only thing is when I enable the VPN I have to restart the Emby server so it recognizes the new IP the when I disable the VPN I have to again restart the Emby server, whereas on the Plex I could enable and disable the VPN but never have to reboot the Plex server.

Many thanks for the help.

I don't think you need to restart the server, but you have to give it time to see the externalip address has changed.  @@Luke would to comment on how often it updates.

Sometimes it may just take a little while before emby realizes that, so that would explain that.

Hello, im thinking to order Emby Lifetime. Do you have to have a working VPN server on the same network as emby server? So that for example iPhone user need to connect to the vpn server to get content from ember server?

That is not necessary, but many people do it.  You can search the forum to find discussions of which VPNs are easiest to set up (it depends on the port forwarding they allow, in particular).

Thanks Paul!

So if I understand you correct, you don't need VPN to axess content from outside of local network?

And also, do you know how much bandwidth it use to stream 1080P movie?

The bandwidth of a video file is hugely variable, depending on the quality of the encode as well as the image size.  You can tell the client what bandwidth to allow (which of course should be within the capability of your network connections), and if the movie file has a greater bandwidth, Emby will transcode it on the fly to meet the requirements.

You don't need a VPN to access your server, but of course you do need your router to allow incoming requests for your server and route then to the correct machine and port.  For more information read the knowlegebase, starting here:
