Can't play locally

I have a strange problem with an Android box running Emby Android Server.  I can play back videos fine on other devices (Windows 10, Safari on a Mac, iPhone Xs, even a dirt-cheap Android phone), but I can't get any videos to play on the device itself. 

 

I've tried Emby client, HTML interface on Chrome, Kodi with EmbyCon plugin - none of them work.  I've tried multiple videos in multiple formats.

 

When the video attempts to play it just spins and spins, or freezes up, depending on which method I'm trying to use.

 

I just wondered if anyone else has encountered this kind of problem.

I have it working with the Emby Kodi plugin (not the EmbyCon plugin - that doesn't work either).  However, this is simply working around the problem because the plugin is playing the media files directly off the local drive, and not through Emby.  At least I have an option to play on the device itself.
