Emby displays series without season info in a weird way since 4 upgrade

Hello,

since upgrading to Emby 4 (4.1.1.0), some series are not properly indexed anymore or at least not combined into a single series.

Example from the directory:

TV-Serien/1.2.oder.3# ls -1
1.2.oder.3.E1012.Guck.mal.wer.da.bellt.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1040.Frisch.aus.der.Fabrik.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1041.Von.Strudeln.Spiralen.und.Feuertornados.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1042.Hier.brummt.der.Baer.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1043.Superschiffe.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1044.Basta.Pasta.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1052.Wunderbauten.der.Welt.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1053.Auf.und.ab.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1054.Schweiz.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1055.Guten.Morgen.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1056.Elton.feat.Dein.Song.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1057.Wunderbare.Waelder.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs

1.2.oder.3.E1065.Retter.in.der.Not.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs
1.2.oder.3.E1066.Vom.Schaf.zum.Pulli.German.WS.720p.HDTV.x264-SQUiZZiEs

In Emby this looks like in the screenshot attached (regular view + meta-manager).

This used to be different and I'm not sure if this is jus ta violation of the naming scheme now or something has changed here since 4. Can you help me?

Hi ebr,

yes those are episodes of a series that does not have seasons and is just consecutive.

Same as for example https://www.thetvdb.com/series/scene-of-the-crime-1/seasons/2013.

I get the naming scheme part and was also not sure about this, but did anything change here? This was not an issue in 3.x.

Do you see any way to fix this without renaming all the files?

Thanks!

Can you try the 4.2 beta and see how that compares? Still, I have to admit, i don't even really understand your folder structure so it's hard to say if it will work or not. Thanks.

Sorry for entering this thread, I have a pretty similar issue. I am following the naming convention, have also german language tv-shows and all but silly display in my emby home screen.

I cannot tell since when this happend, from my guess, i have this issue for about 3 months now. I did delete the tv-shows library, rebuilt, but the silly display remains unfortunately.

I read trough this forum, this is the only post that seems quite similar to my issue.

I enclose a screenshot of the relevant home screen.

If you have a look for example on the rig folder structure, everything looks rather ok (at least to me):

5cd6844a797f8_rig.png

I did select the multi directory flag in the series menu.

I have no screenshot from the past but I have the impression that under series / TV shows, I just saw the series not the respektive episodes of the show.

It gets even worse, if I have a look at the series:

Every episode is displayed in a 1:1 relation...

Thank you for your help.

Cheers, Lati

The only difference I can see in the beta is now it says "Season unknown" on each of these individual files. Still, they are not organized under the Umbrella of the series.

Regarding the directory structure, it's like this:

/mnt/series < TV source

/mnt/series/Tatort < series name

/mnt/series/Tatort/Tatort.E1085.Ein.Tag.wie.jeder.andere.GERMAN.720p.HDTV.x264-ACED < episode name

The series does not have any seasons.

Any idea what was different in Emby 3, which didn't have that issue? The previous post sounds like a different issue since that has proper season naming and I suspect the dir name (Se01) should be S01.

Here you go. Is there any source I could diff between 4 and 3 to have a closer look or can you suggest any meta-manager changes to make this work? This is quite annoying and I can't be renaming files for the lifetime of this series (and others).

Try renaming your parent folder from "se01" to "Season 1" and rescan, it should be identified correctly then.

Cheers.

There's no season in the filename, that's why this is happening. For best results you need to use a supported tv naming convention:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/TV-naming

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

The thread started with the assumption that there is no season and that it does not follow the above naming convention.

However, I'd like to point out that:

1. this wasn't an issue in 3, so I'm assuming it's a regression

2. renaming does not solve the problem from a user's perspective as that's not a one-time task

3. there are simply no seasons, the episodes are consecutive per year and imho this is not a crude exception, but there's a rather large pile of series for which this is true

2 imho is the bigger issue here as these series will continue to release new episodes and this changes the workflow as a user from simply dropping files into emby from requiring to make a change on the server. Also as a user, you need to notice first that this affects a series, i.e. by having messed up data and Emby, which is not great.

Am I wrong to assume that it's a fairly minor software change to assume S01 if no series was found in the naming?

Is there any chance that you could check what changed between 3 and 4 here? I would do that myself if the 4 code would still be open source.

Additionally, why not support fixing that once via the meta-manager, which does not require a change on the server file system?

I guess a way to understand why this might muck things up is that "se01" looks like the code for "Season null Episode 01" - which would match the message "Season Unknown".

The issue is the structure and/or naming scheme has never technically been supported.  So if it worked previously that was a plus, but will never guarantee it to work in the future.

Indeed, it worked in the past, all my tv shows are sorted like this (se01 se02..). It started about 2 or 3 months ago to get the strange effect.

I did try to start to rename them to season 1... and it works.

To me, this is like a downgrade, however, I will start remaning all my tv shows back on track. honestly speaking, to me,

Thank you all for your help.

Kind regards, Lati

You don't need a season folder but you still need to use a supported naming convention so that the server can determine the season and episode numbers from the file.

Without that, that's why you get the season unknown folder.

Not following naming conventions will usually yields unpredictable results.

On thetvdb.com, this show uses years instead of season number.

EDIT: And as it happens once in a while over there, Its very much incomplete.

Season 2015 looks normal, but no seasons 2016 or 2017, season 2018 list e05, e10 and e11 only, and s2019 list e15

Properly named as per convention, this is how it would look:

File folder structure should looks something like:

TV/1, 2 oder 3/s2015/1, 2 oder 3 s2015e01 Alles Rot

Alright I guess the summary is none of this will change and I get it. I stand to saying that for a web application I find it somewhat sad that it's not possible to make such assumptions in the app or provide a way to fix it through the meta manager without having to touch the filesystem, but respect that others don't seem to agree with that. Maybe something for Emby 5? ;)

What would you like emby to do in this situation?

What would you like emby to do in this situation?

Since it's designed to assume that a series has a season, it should assume S01 if there's none in the naming or allow a user to specify it and set tvdb/imdb data nonetheless for the top level directory of that series.

I'd also argue that being able to create a mapping between an existing file name and a "virtual" name that would be taken with priority would be useful since giving users admin in Emby is easy, but giving people with the intention to maintain a library file system access is another thing.
