matrix0807 2 Posted April 16, 2019 Posted April 16, 2019 Hallo, i'm using emby for my friends on the same building. I used the portable version, like on picture i attach. the question is: the version i use is 3.5.3.0. and now on the download page https://emby.media/windows-server.html, the portable version is 4.0.3.0 how to update to new version? in version 3.5.3.0 i can't take metadata anymore from anywhere (imdb/tvdb,etc). is it just download the new version and overwrite the old files with new files on the same folder? thx
Happy2Play 9780 Posted April 16, 2019 Posted April 16, 2019 (edited) Technically auto update should work, but yes it is just a matter of getting the new system folder and replacing the existing system folder. Does the Dashboard not show this? Edited April 16, 2019 by Happy2Play
matrix0807 2 Posted April 16, 2019 Author Posted April 16, 2019 Technically auto update should work, but yes it is just a matter of getting the new system folder and replacing the existing system folder. Does the Dashboard not show this? No, my dashboard look like this: any idea how to update?
Solution Happy2Play 9780 Posted April 16, 2019 Solution Posted April 16, 2019 That version still had the app update scheduled task so I would run it. The server log should show any issues getting the update. But you can get it manually via the download page and you can manually replace the system folder if needed. Note as discussed on the forum 4.0 was a major upgrade. 1

IkeTaylor11 61 Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 @@Luke is the portable version of Emby truly pick up and go? For example, can I download and extract Emby portable on a USB connected hard drive, run the software from the USB drive and move the USB drive to a different computer to run the same server just by running embyserver.exe from the USB drive? I am trying to build a complete server on a USB HDD that can be moved to any computer and run. All the media and files would reside stricting on the USB drive. I just want to make sure this is possible before I attempt to do it. This would be considered an *offline* server to be used when an internet connection isn't possible and the hard drive would be used on multiple computers for traveling. The hard drive and computer would only be *online* when updating media so it could get the proper metadata.
ebr 16172 Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Yes, as long as all the areas the server accesses are either on the USB drive or always addressable the exact same way regardless of the computer attached, that should work.

Since this is a portable hard drive the drive letter could change when switching between computers, do i have to make sure the drive letter is the same on each computer i plug the hard drive into?

Correct and no. All our default locations will be relative to (under) the install folder.
IkeTaylor11 61 Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Correct and no. All our default locations will be relative to (under) the install folder. great, thank you for the quick response. I'm gonna give it a go tonight.
rsava 2 Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Wow, so glad I stumbled across this topic. This is game changing for me, thanks for including this with Emby. Setup was as easy as regular Emby and if you are saying this does not need to be the same drive letter when I switch computers it just made my life on the road so easy.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Libraries are should be the only issue when relocating the portable. So it depends on how you have configured your library paths. As for Emby itself Is should be self contained now.

I usually do a movies and tv shows folder at the root and then make those libraries. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I don't know of a easy way if the library path is changing (drive letter) when plugged into different system. As paths (drive letters) are all relative to the system you plugged into, and there is no guarantee the same drive letter will be available on every system. Each system will remember the drive letter if you assign one on each machine. I would assume a script can be made and place one the portable drive, then you run in on every machine you plug the device it to ensure the same drive letter is used, assuming that drive letter is available.
IkeTaylor11 61 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 Well this was all good in theory, in practicality it doesn't work at all. All my media is transcoding and ffmpeg is taking up 100% of the CPU. Can't even get movies to play for more than 2 seconds at a time without buffering. If I play them using VLC they work perfectly. The odd thing is I don't see my disk being hit hard, just the CPU.

Since the drive will be the same as the Emby server, wouldn't just a rooted path reference always work regardless of the drive letter...? e.g. \media\movies
IkeTaylor11 61 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 Since the drive will be the same as the Emby server, wouldn't just a rooted path reference always work regardless of the drive letter...? e.g. \media\movies Emby doesn't allow you to specify your own path in the software. You have to use the Add Path option which makes you drill down into the drive and then select a folder. Unless I am doing this wrong. Would love to be able to not choose a specific drive letter. I have already run into a situation where plugging the drive into a different PC gave it a different drive letter and I had to change the drive letter for Emby to see the libraries.
ebr 16172 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 Emby doesn't allow you to specify your own path in the software. Of course it does... Now, that path has to be valid, but you can type it in (as is indicated right there in the yellow call-out).
IkeTaylor11 61 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 Of course it does... Now, that path has to be valid, but you can type it in (as is indicated right there in the yellow call-out). Ok I figured that part out. But, it doesn't appear that the path without the drive letter works. I have attached a screen shot of my drive layout. What would I use for the path to add the Movies library? I tried \Movies and that didn't find any of the media.
ebr 16172 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 That screen shot doesn't show me enough context to answer that question but can you post the server log from the completed library scan after you added the folder?
IkeTaylor11 61 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 That screen shot doesn't show me enough context to answer that question but can you post the server log from the completed library scan after you added the folder? server log is attached. All folders are at the root of the drive. So my drive is E:\ right now. Emby Server - this is where emby portable is Movies - this is all my movies TV Shows - this is all my tv episodes I have tried \Movies and \Movies\ and neither option finds media after a library scan. embyserver.txt

In the example you list above I had the path for the library set as E:\Movies. Trying to get all this working without having to specify the actual drive letter, since that can change any time the hard drive is plugged into a new PC.
ebr 16172 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 Can you please re-start the server with the new library path setup, then run a library scan and post that server log?
