Fire TV 4K Stick issue - videos recorded via HDHomerun cause Emby on FireTV 4K to crash (freeze)

Hi guys

I have been recording a load of Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly's Kingdom from Channel 5 HD for my toddler using Emby connected to my HDHomerun. 

Because of the large amounts of rubbish before and after each episode I am using Avidemux to top and tail them, and then multiplex them into mkv files (instead of the .ts transport stream files they are saved in by Emby).

I can play the files back fine via Emby on my Shield TV, Sony Android TV and Android mobile, but for some reason when I try to play back on Emby on the Fire TV 4K Stick we just get a second or so of the episode, and then the video just freezes, sometimes with audio continuing and sometimes just a black screen and no audio or video. I then have to reboot the device to get Emby to work again. 

I believe the Channel 5 HD streams (via TV aerial) are 1080 interlaced, but surely the Fire shouldn't have any issues if it can play 4k files?

Hi.  Can you show us the specifics about one of these items (media info from web app)?

 

Have you tried adjusting the deinterlacing setting in the app?

Hi ebr. I tried adjusting the settings in the Fire Emby app - turned deinterlacing on SD and HD content on (it was off), but it still didn't play. It kind of hung for a while (presumably whilst the server was deinterlacing it) but then it still did the same. I turned it back off again and it was still the same. 

When you say the media info from web app, where do I find that?

Hmmm, I can't. I turn on debug, play the video, the audio plays but video stuck about a second in, but when I stop the playback it freezes and then crashes, so it doesn't give me the option to send a log. When I restart there is no optoin to send a log, just the normal options. 

I've gone into the logs in Emby Server and this seems to have been created;

No! Not sure where you're getting that from! Emby Server is on a Qnap NAS, called something like TV & New Movies

When I just restart the Emby app I just get a black screen. I have to reboot the Fire TV to get it to run again. I don't get an option to submit a log file when I reboot and restart Emby

You don't need to reboot the Fire.  Just go into the settings and force-close the Emby app.  Then re-start Emby and send the log.

Thanks, unfortunately I cannot see the ultimate cause of the app shutting down.  My best guess right now would be an out of memory error during playback.  Do you have a lot of other things running on the device?

OK, I've looked at a few more things. Firstly, the Fire stick has 3.2 of 5.8 GB free - the only not default apps installed are BBC Iplayer, My5 and Plex, so it shouldn't be a storage problem. 

I've tried playing back other recordings that were done by Emby via the HDHomerun and they won't play back either. I wondered if it was where I was topping and tailing and remuxing to mkv or mp4, but seemingly not, as it struggles to play any back, the same problems. Additionally, it won't play back any live channels from the HDHomerun via Emby either; it just crashes in the same way. I have done a couple more logs; they'll be under the use "Matt & Katie".

I also have a Chromecast 4K on that TV. I tried playing some of the videos back in Emby on my Android phone and casting to the Chromecast. They did play back, but the picture was really messed up. All squashed up to the top two thirds and randoms lines everywhere, I'm guessing that the interlace 1080 video is causing Emby to have problems with the video that comes from the HDHomerun. 

What I don't understand is why my Shield TV, Sony Bravia TV with Android TV as the OS, my wife's iPhone and my Android phone and tablet all play them back fine, but the Fire TV 4K and Chromecast don't like them. 

If it makes you feel any better I'm also finding Plex on the Fire Stick and casting to Plex on the Chromecast 4K has the same problem! Bizarelly, however, the Plex app on my crappy 21" Samsung Smart(ish) TV from about four years ago will play them back! 

I guess I could look at converting them all to deinterlaced videos, but that'll be a pain as I'll need to work out settings and there are hundreds to do!

Well, not sure.   Your sample plays perfectly for me on my Fire TV.

 

On my Mi box, it doesn't crash but it doesn't play smoothly.  For the first several seconds, the video is very choppy and then it lines out and is mostly okay.
