Show backdrop behind 4:3 content, rather than black space?

Using the web UI on a slow connection, just now, and the backdrop took a bit longer than usual to fade when starting playback of a 4:3 movie.

 

The result actually looked really great.

 

It'd be nice to have some control over what is shown to either side of a 4:3 movie.

I still use a plasma, so the option for anything but black bars would be better.

 

Non-linear stretch would be even better, still....

It would be less distracting if the background were mostly desaturated first

Truth be told, I rarely use the web interface on my television.

 

I wouldn't really mind if it were never added as an option, I'm just saying if it was ever something simple to implement, I wouldn't mind the option for gray bars or something rather than black.

 

I'm low-key hoping my plasma kicks it in the next year or so, anyways, so I can buy myself an OLED without feeling too guilty.
