Library folders not scanning, also auto regenerating library i want removed.

Hi all, i saw something like this a while ago, but didn't see the final fix if there was one.

due to issues with my windows server2012 SMBS edition that i had hosting my Emby setup, i've migrated everything back to the old previous server as a keep alive till i rebuild the machine that failed with 2016 or such like. anyway.

current machine hosting the current problems.

AMD PhenomII x6 1055T

8gig ram,

LSI logic raid controller, hosting 2x 2TB and 5x 4TB as data drives. no raid configured, just acting as a JBOD controller.

all data drives managed by "drive bender", configured into a single 24gig pool - data replication and protection enabled at the folder level for stuff i care about - photos documents blah blah blah. not for videos - too much data.

Windows home server 2011 on SSD off of an onboard sata port. (legit license, cut down version of 2008r2 64bit for £30)

Emby version 4.0.3.0 - premium key enabled.

now, library names and folders.

"Bluerays" points to D:\serverfolders\Videos\Bluerays

"DVDs" points to D:\serverfolders\Videos\DVDs

"TV Shows"  pointed to d:\serverfolders\recorded tv

"Photos" points to D:\serverfolders\Pictures

everything worked fine.

the kids are now old enough to start working the TV themselves, so i figured i'd better start splitting out the kids stuff from the adult stuff.

so i added:-

"Kids DVDs" - points to D:\serverfolders\Videos\KidsDVDs

and CHANGED:-

"TV Shows" to now point to new folder in recorded TV, d:\serverfolders\recorded TV\TV shows

and then added:-

"Kids TV Shows" to point to d:\serverfolders\recorded TV\Kids TV Shows

and literally copied the kiddy relevant media, that Emby all previously recognised and organised fine, in videos\DVDs and recorded TV,  to "videos\Kids DVDs" and "recorded TV\TV Shows" and "recordedTV\Kids TV Shows".

so i blew the Emby library away and did a rescan from scratch to pickup the media changes. Kids TV shows didn't scan. and i now have a "recordings" library folder that points to d:\serverfolders\recorded TV.

i remembered from the previous forum chat i'd seen, that if you have a nested library folder within another folder that is also scanned, you could have problems. so i removed the "recordings" folder that had autogenerated, and restarted Emby. it came back.

i left the recordings library, and just removed the folder that it pointed to - on restarting Emby, it generated another library called Recordings1.

i left the library again, and again, just removed the folder that it pointed to. again, it generated another library called Recordings11.

So clearly something screwy is going on there, and i'm guessing the "Kids TV Shows" and "TV Shows" folders won't scan, because they are inside the scan area contained in the "recordingsXX" Library that i can't get rid of.

i've attached a screen grab of my librarys in emby and my server shares.

there is some legacy stuff there like the printer that doesn't exist anymore, and the MyMovies stuff that was a waste of time.

any thoughts or pointers most welcome.

Hi, the problem is you already have this library added:

d:\serverfolders\recorded tv

You can't add another library using the same folder or sub-folder of it. This is something we'd like to accommodate in the future, but we're not quite there yet. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !

Hey there, Happy to see that you could help :)

yeah i figured from the previous chat, so i removed the "TV shows" library pointing to "d:\serverfolders\recorded TV", and created two new physical folders residing in the "Recorded TV" folder - that the old library (that was removed) used to point to as follows:-

d:\serverfolders\recorded TV\Kids TV Shows

and

d:\serverfolders\recorded TV\TV shows

i then created two new librarys for each of these folders.

But emby autogenerated a new "Recordings" library, that pointed to the original location of d\:serverfolders\recorded TV - one folder level below the two new folders i want the two new librarys to see - but fail to because of nesting folder structure etc etc...

trying to remove the library, just results in "recordings" being auto generated again on Emby restart, to point to the same location.

so trying to just leave the "recordings" Library but remove its folder path, auto generates a "recordings1" library.

doing the same again, auto generates a "recordings11" library. So i suspect something is hanging around in a config file or something, that is referencing this physical folder location when it should have been removed. So i guess whats happening, with all credit to Emby and you guys, it tries to fill in the blanks and generates a library?

my next idea is to re-establish the "TV Shows" library to point to the "D:\serverfolders\Recorded TV" - where "recordings" seems to be so insistent on mapping itself to. Then maybe creating a totally new server share called "Kids TV" and creating a new library that points to that.

So. my actual libraries that i want in Emby, right now, do not cross reference each other, and are not nesting inside each other.

The auto generated "Recordings" library - references a folder that DOES cause the nesting issue - and as it's the higher level folder, actually completes a library scan successfully adding in everything - including stuff i don't want indexed yet that hasn't been named correctly, or such like.

defeating the purpose of me having a temp area for editing on that share, or seperating the Kids TV from the Grown-ups TV.

I am unable to modify or remove the "recordings" library without it re-generating another "recordings" library pointing to the old location...

my other idea was that i only seemed to have problems with folders that had a space in the name. so tried to remove the spaces, but no difference in the result.

thanks again for your time. have tried "switching it off and back on again" a few times too :D

ok small amount of progress.

i've created two completely new, separate server folder shares

d:\serverfolders\kidstvshows

d:\serverfolders\tvshows

and i've created two new library's to point to those folders called "Kids TV Shows" and "TV Shows". (No spaces in the name)

the library scan runs successfully and i can see the meta data generated has today's date on it.

however. I've removed the "Recordings" library, and again, it's been automatically recreated. so it seems i am now unable to separate anything in "D:\serverfolders\recorded TV" into separate folders for separate library's - as it'll just get stuck under the "Recordings" library that i don't want, pointing to the root of that server share.

so i'm out of the woods, and Emby now works again, as last night, prior to this, nothing would play. but now things play, and the "resume" function works for things watched previously. Just i've got this weird auto generated library that's effectively blocking my whole recorded TV share. So not 100%

Have you tried deleting it?

deleting / removing the Library? - yes.

deleting / removing the physical "d:\serverfolders\recorded TV" folder - no.

i've just "removed" the Recordings emby library now, and i'm letting it do a library re-scan to sync everything.

[edit]

scan completed, the "recordings" library is still gone. i'm going to re-start the emby server to see if that re-creates the "recordings" library again.

[edit2]

it's baaaaaaack.

[edit3]

shall i physically delete the folder that the "recordings" library points to?

@@darksun9210, please try blanking out the default recording path in DVR settings, then you should be able to delete that library and it won't come back. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !

Hello all

Sorry to be such a pain

I use frenass 11.2 and the emby plugin ver 4.2.1.0

I have configured the jail correctly

I have 3 libraries

  1. Movies (all movies in their seperate folders)
  2. TV Shows (all show are in separate series folders, then season the episode)
  3. Music (all artists in separate folders then albums then tracks)

all my mount points have the same structure                                               in the jail

/mnt/media/music                                                                                /mnt/media/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/music

/mnt/media/movies                                                                              /mnt/media/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/movies

/mnt/media/TV Shows                                                                         /mnt/media/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/tv shows

I added the 3 libraries to emby... Music Movies TV Shows

Upon scanning the libraries, the scan populated the movies library and the music library but did not load tv shows library

I deleted the tv shows library in emby and then re configured it

I deleted and readded the tv shows mount point

I deleted the tv shows library  again in emby and then re configured it

and still the TV shows library will not populate

Thank you as always for your help

Sorry this is not the same thing.

I understood for you previous msg that i should post this more appropriately. So I trolled the msg and found this thread .

Before i could not add the TV  library. The solution was to  (at least in my mind) to uninstall and reinstall emby server ...which i did. so we went one step forward.

The library was added

Now I can add the TV show library but library would not be scanned

I have no better solutions for this

Hello all

As an update

have this error in the logs

2019-10-04 08:34:30.559 Info LibraryMonitor: Skipping realtime monitor for /media/TV Shows because the path does not exist.

Yet emby does recognize the path when i set up the TV shows library. It offer no faults when I choose /media/TV Shows as a path. I believe that this is the cause of my problem however i have no clue on how to fix this.

I have been at this issue for the whole week with not success.

Thank you in advance

Hello all

Thank you for your willingness to review this and for helping me.

This is the current situation
This my current mount point in freenas for my TV shows. Do you see any issues with the?

/mnt/media/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/TV Shows

When i go to emby and add a library I select content type as TV Shows emby suggests the same name in the in the display field

I add a folder (+)

I click on the /

I scroll down to media and that offers me a choice of movies, music and tvshows. Not TV Shows.

tvshows is a folder in the jail but so is TV Shows.

when I scan the library emby does not populate any data to the library

instead of pasting the whole logs in this forum I uses uploadfiles.io. You could download the file from here

Once again thank you so much

I don't use freenas but it sounds like you don't have permissions set up correctly OUTSIDE of Emby.  So effectively, Emby doesn't see the contents of those libraries.

Try comparing the folder permissions of a working library such as movies to the tv show library to see what is different.

Hello

@@cayars thank you for your suggestion and for looking at this on your saturday.

I compared the 3 mount points and to me they seem identical. When i developed those mount points i kept them pretty much vanila. I only changed the from and to paths

Posted

So you have both tvshows & TV Shows setup in jail?

Are either of these usable in Emby if there are contents in the local directory?

Posted

Hi Thank you for responding

Yes they are both set up in the jail.

This morning i tried something stupid. I set both TV Shows and tvshows up as mount points and when i go to set up a new folder Emby does not offer any of the 2 as options. I only see movies and music.

On the Nas there is content for TV Shows under /mmnt/media/TV Shows

I am thinking of deleting both folder from the jail and start over

or better yet delete the plugin and the jail clean the jail and start completely over. I did do this once before and it di not work.

Yesterday my modem failed and i had to replace it. I had to reconfigure all and i deleted the browser cache. Maybe with this a clean slate will work

Hello all

I deleted the jails in Freenas and removed the emby plugin

I performed  an iocage clean -a

Nad re installed emby as a freenas plugin

I added the 3 mount points in the freenas emby jail for mof=vies music and tv shows

emby only recognised the movies and music subfolder and does not recognise the TV shows mount point

Thank you

Hello

to add all 3 mount points are vanilla. in other words I just specified the to and from folders and saved

Hello

If you've just mounted and done nothing further, then it's definitely a permissions issue.

Typical FreeNAS mounts have read access specified for User and Group but not Other. If your files are owned by user ABC and Emby is running as user XYZ then Emby won't have permission to view the files.

Check out this thread on the FreeNAS forums for the best methods of giving your jails permissions,

https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/how-to-giving-plugins-write-permissions-to-your-data.27273/

My personal go-to is Group permission. It's very easy to do.

Create a group in the Emby jail that matches the group your files belong to (Same name [case sensitive] and same group ID)

Add the Emby user to the group.

Done! Emby will now have access to the files.

Posted

Thank you for taking the time to respond to this on your weekend

My knowledge in permissions and jails is extremely limited.

Would you be so kind to further guide me on how to set up this user and group in a jail.

Once again thank you

Thank you all for your assistance

with all your help i managed to successfully install emby server on the freenas box and loaded music movies and tv shows folders

as inspector clouseau would say the probleme is solved

now that this is solved on to the next learning phase integrate emby to micasa, alexa  and kodi,

once again thank you all
