mwe21975 0 Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 (edited) I have my server on a lenovo thinkpad i7 4610mq laptop and I have most of my movie library downloaded in either mkv or mp4 container with ac3 or aac Audio. I have pretty much managed to get my remote streamers to direct play most content. For my users, under internet streaming bitrate limit should I... leave that blank, put it high at like 150 or 100 and have them change settings on their devices to 1080p @ 60 or put it at 60 mbps on my end and have them change it to 1080p@ 60 on their end? What is your internet upload speed? If it were that high then default settings would/should direct play the media depending on the client/app.
mwe21975 0 Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 I have 150 down like 10-12 up. Unknown what my “users” have. Of course I would want everything to direct play if possible. I come from plex where hardly anything remote direct played. So far on emby most everything is direct playing.

I come from plex where hardly anything remote direct played. So far on emby most everything is direct playing. If that's your upload then your going to want to limit it less than that. So that your connection can actually steam the content. If they are trying to steam a 60mbps file and all you can do is 10mbps then the math doesn't work. I tend to can the outgoing limit at half my upload bandwidth. So for you that would be about 5mbps. This way you should be able to handle it fine and also leaving breathing room on your network.
Happy2Play 9782 Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 So your media is limited to a upload rate of about 10mb, as you are feeding the media not receiving it. So the next question would be what bitrate is the media they are trying to play? But when it comes to the internet, no one connection is the same, so there are to many variables to say one thing with work.
mwe21975 0 Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 Most of the media bitrates are between 2,xxx and 9,xxx Ahh so ur saying instead of telling them to set it at 1080p @ 60 I should prolly tell them 1080p @ whatever the lowest is.. maybe 10 or 7 or 5ish?
Happy2Play 9782 Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 There server should already be calculating the best rate for the connection they are requesting the media from. Realistically you should only adjust the quality options if you want to force something to transcode or you are having issues playing something at those higher rates.
mwe21975 0 Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 Oh. That would be my fault then bc I told them to change the video playback to 1080p @60. So I should have them lower that or put it on auto if that’s an option?
ebr 16185 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Correct. Have them put the setting back to "Auto". Then, on your end in the server, I would suggest setting the Internet streaming limit to about 1/4 of your expected available bandwidth. That would allow 2-3 simultaneous remote sessions.
