Music Videos / Music (Ignoring Artist Names?)

So i have a real mess on my hands all of a sudden!  I clean installed emby a couple of days ago (to see if it would fix some other issues i had).  Currently back to Version 4.0.2.0.  Will go back to the beta shortly.

But something has gone a stray with my music and music video libraries.  I had IMVDb installed so my first stop was to uninstall this and re-scan said libraries.  This did not help so i removed both libraries did two full scans and added my music video library back.  These are possibly the two biggest libraries i have so i really didn't want to do this.  Scrapping takes at least a day.  It did not help.  I will assume when i add my music library it is going to do the same...

Problem is i no longer have Album Artists???  And it appears music videos are ignoring my file names, well at least ignoring the artist name...  I do music videos for local bands, so i have a lot of "covers" videos as an example.  These local bands are no longer showing up in my library, but the videos are showing up in the directory of the ORIGINAL artist???  My naming convention has not changed in forever...

Artist Name/Artist Name - Video Name

This install it appears that it is just looking at Video Name?  Hence why i removed that IMVDb plug in!  But that is what made me notice another issue as well...  My videos no longer have the Artist Name anywhere!  All i can say is i am glad whatever is going on it did not actually change or delete any of my files.  But i DO have NFO files for an awful lot of music videos now and wonder if the only way i am going to fix this is to delete them all???

So here is a picture of the first page of my music videos library...

5c840355addbd_Musicvideo.jpg

It used to show Artist Name - Song Name.  Now it just shows the song name.  That's lets just say very confusing to look at.  Merging videos into artist folders ignoring the Artist Name is no good either.

Moving On...  Music Library is really out of wack!

I am not certain which tag is used for the main page recently added section, if it is Album Artist or Artist under the Album name, but it is gone.  I am going to assume it was Album Artist as it did display Various Artist until recently.   But according to my server i now only have 48 Album Artists...  This photo is the only page for Album artists i have now.

5c8404ed71d03_AlbumARTISTS.jpg

It goes without saying that this in horribly incorrect.

And last but not least missing albums...

5c840e492275b_Capture2.jpgThis is an issue through out my library.  But please note i did not have music videos shown within my music  artist folders (IMVDb i know).  Did IMVDb create all these new issues and how do i fix this now that its uninstalled???

Music and Music Videos has never given me fits before.  I know the music video structure isn't exactly what emby would like me to have, but it has always worked the way i needed it too.  As for my Music library it is spot on and super clean.

I am running another scan of my music video library hoping that it is going to fix itself this time, but pretty sure i already know the outcome...  And i haven't bothered adding my music library again (yet) as it will take close to a day to scrape meta again.      Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance (as always)

For giggles i deleted all the nfo files in my music and music video sections.  Know that isnt the cause, but what the heck.  Deleted my music video library, did two scans, added my music video library back.

Same results...

BAFFLED!

How did you get a season.nfo in your Van Halen folder?

Yah, i have no idea how that happened either...  I probably deleted 300 or so of them in a bulk delete throughout my collection.  Had like 17000 nfo files as well.  Thats all cleaned back up again!

with regard to Music Videos - the home screen on 4.x has never shown the Artist name - just the year and title

does the artist (in your metadata tags) show up on the MV home page?

The album (Back in Black) has to be added manually

I never had music videos in my recently added.  My music video library is the only place i go to view them.  The artist name (think in this case Album Artist) is no longer showing for music albums.  I most certainly find the way you have music videos set up is much more appealing than my way, but there are just too many files for me to change at this point.  And my guess is IMVDb tried to do its thing, at least to my video collection, with really bad results because i do not have the file structure the way it needs to be in order for it to do its thing correctly.

But i really was at a loss on how to correct what was done.  After removing the library 3 or 4 different times.  Scanned numerous times before and after and what i mentioned above was coming back every time.

Now i have no idea why, and i'm guessing nothing at all to do with these issues, i went into the logs and noticed a few errors with the Open Movie Database and the TheMovieDb plug-ins...

"System.IO.IOException: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"

So i poked and hoped by removing these two plug-ins, rebooting the server, and reinstalling these.  Should in my dumb opinion not have anything to do with said issues...  BUT my music videos are now repopulating the way i expect them to with the way my library is set up...

5c8463699bc56_Capture.jpg

Couldn't even begin to explain why.

I am now, painfully, bringing my music library back in.  Hopefully i will have album artists when it is all said and done...

Plex had a VERY simple way of dealing with music and music videos.  Look at the ARTIST folder names of both music videos and music library.  If there is an exact match short cut the music video files to the Music Artist display.  Achieved the same end result as what i'd like IMVDb to do.  Include music videos under the Music Artists in the Music Library, but without all the extra scraping IMVDb does.

If my Music comes back into the server correctly we are just going to call this issue a good old mystery and move on from it!

Thanks for the reply...  much appreciated!

I will update the list screen to display the music artist under the video title. This of course assumes the artist is filled out in Emby.

My music video library has repopulated its self correctly (for the way i have the directories setup).  It's been this way for as long as i can remember and happy with it.  IMVDb took my library and attempted to guess its way thru the metadata scraping (which my directory is not set up correctly for).  It caused quite the mess.  And i don't see me changing my folder structure anytime in the future for it to work "correctly".

Anything you guys decide to do to enhance the music video libraries i will be on board with.  But i wont be using IMVDb any time soon!

My bigger concern is my music library.  It is currently rebuilding its self.  I see that i already have hundreds of Album Artists which is a great sign that this has been fixed as well.

Appreciate your time...  thanks!

Resolved!  Cant tell you what ultimately made the server correct its self, but everything is back to my normal.  Removing those two plug-ins, rebooting, adding removed plug-ins, restart, full scan, and then adding my two libraries was the last ditch attempt at fixing this headache.  All my album artists are back as well...

Don't know. can't explain what fixed it, but at the end its all back and fixed.

Thanks for all the views and suggestions!  Case closed

So it appears that i still have some music video issues...

I haven't gotten thru my library, as i do not wish to go one artist at a time to see what files are and what file are NOT showing up.  But i feel pretty confident at this point by just going thru artist starting with A that things are astray!!!

As examples i have no ABBA videos showing up (i have 6 or 8 in my ABBA folder).  ABBA/ABBA - Video Title

I have 50 ish ACDC videos.  30 show up.  ACDC/ACDC - Video Title

Now here is the kicker...  I noticed some showed up the way i want them to :  AC/DC - Video Title  The other half of the ones that are recognized are just showing up as the video title.  So they are not included in the AC/DC folder when you view by folder.  I have to go rename these files in the metadata manager and add the ACDC -  to the title.  Also i see that these files have had the album name AC\/DC???  I have NO idea where this album title came from???  From a quick scan thru my library i noticed many other Video Title only names and not my preferred Artist - Video Name.  This seems like something that IMVDb would do.

So here is the question...  Did the epic fail with IMVDb leave a residue behind in a database somewhere (even after uninstalling it)?  I know i did not have any meta embedded in any of these music video files.

I have just uninstalled my music video library again...  Hopefully someone will point out the database that might still hold some leftover IMVDb data?  Before i install my music library again...

Music video library has always been a library that just installed without any issues.  Since the MB days.  I cant grasp why its being so temperamental all of a sudden.

Thanks once again in advance...

Something is remembering watched videos (little green check mark), where i put the music video library in the display list and whatever IMVDb did to my video metadata (on the server not to individual files).  I also noticed in the log this the last time i added the music video library:

2019-03-18 23:20:58.789 Error BaseItem: Found folder containing items with duplicate id. Path: C:\Users\nepat\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\root\default, Child Name: C:\Users\nepat\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\root\default\Music videos2019-03-18 23:20:58.789 Error BaseItem: Found folder containing items with duplicate id. Path: C:\Users\nepat\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\root\default, Child Name: C:\Users\nepat\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\root\default\Music videos1

If i deleted the music video library, full scanned twice before adding the library again, i would assume that there would not be any traces of previous music video library?

I am really considering a full format of my PC at this point.  My last attempt was a clean install of just emby...

Try setting  up the library without imvdb.

Thanks Luke....  I haven't had imvdb installed since i started troubleshooting this music video issue.  But i think its still creeping around in the background somehow.

It's been a couple of years since i cleaned the system, format...  (possibly a wednesday / thursday project)

Keep in mind that although we have those recommended naming guidelines, we do not actually parse the artist name out of the file name. Unless it's tagged in the file with id3 data, you'll need to manually enter it in Emby.

Obviously i would want to add this data in the files themselves as apposed to changing just the information in the emby database.  That just seems like disaster waiting to happen...

As a side note (and nothing to do with my issue in this thread):

Plex must parse the artist title right from the file name.  Its actually a great feature that i did enjoy.  They had to be looking at the artist by either the folder name or by the file name...  Artist/Artist - Video Name

Then i am guessing they probably added a shortcut of the video to the artist in the music section.  Worked with no scrapping and no metadata.  I say it was an almost flawless solution.  I really dont care what album spawned the music video.

Anyway i haven't found a solution (but still looking) for a way to permanently add at least artist tags to my video (?) collection.

I also fixed my ABBA files not showing up.  Removing the folder and doing a scan would not fix them not showing up.  But renaming them and doing a scan did?  I Then put them back to the way they were and they continued to show up?

I have yet to find a solution that emby will read (or i found a solution and just don't realize it).  Tried many many meta managers.  Can get artist to show up as "contributing artists"  in a files windows properties.  mp3tag thinks it wrote to the file and returns the correct artist tag.  Musicbrainz picard (although not so happy with reading video files) seems to act like it is writing meta.  I mean i tried 4 or 5 different solutions.

My next attempt is using ffmpeg and re-encoding a test video and add meta during the process...  The thought of re-encoding the library is not exciting, but if it works i'll do it.  I would much rather have a permanent solution. I just know somewhere down the road i am going to have an issue and will lose hours and hours of manually editing these files in metadata manager and have to do it again from scratch.

mp3tag, picard work great, at least for music files.

Absolutely!  Been my go to programs for mp3's for a long time.  Trying to add a artist tag to video, and having emby recognize it, is not going well.

I haven't tried to re-encode a video with ffmpeg yet to see if that is the missing link.

itunes embedded metadata format is also supported.
