Order of multiple version movies

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have started to play around with movies that have multiple versions.

Great feature. Now I can show 3D and 2D versions of the film under

the same movie entry.

But what I couldn't figure out is how to influence the order in which

the different versions appear in the combo box.

Actually I would like the 2D version of the movie preselected as default.

How could this be achieved?

Thanks.

Give us an example of the names you are using for a specific movie.

Sure I use something like this:

(...)/Movie.2008/Movie.2008 - German.DL.720p.mkv

      Movie.2008/Movie.2008 - HSBS.3D.1080p.Eng.DTS.mkv

Here the box shows entries

"HSBS.3D.1080p.Eng.DTS"

"German.DL.720p"

in that order.

So obviously it's not sorted alphabetically. Does 720p/1080p have an influence?

Right now there isn't any such thing as a default at it will vary per device.

The default is the highest quality that can direct play, or if none can, the most efficient in terms of server resources required.

Working off what Luke just mentioned, I don't think many of us use multi-version support with 3D movies as there isn't a way to know if a device plugged into a TV can use 3D formats.  Therefore Emby doesn't know what version to use.

What I do is keep a separate Library specific for 3D films.  This allows me to share or not share this library with different people if they can/can't play 3D formats.  This also makes it very easy to find these films as well.

Many people setup 3D films this same way.  Hopefully this helps.

Actually that's what I had before. Separate libraries for 3D content and for 2D content.

But I use the general search mask quite a lot and if I do that such a movie then shows

up as 'duplicate', and I always have to check if it's a 'real' duplicate - which I then would

rather delete - or just the 3D and 2D version - which I usually keep.

Maybe anyone has a better idea for this issue, e.g., having a 3D icon on top of the

thumbnail so it can be seen at the first glance.

Unfortunately emby isn't completely trustworthy when it comes to detecting 3D material.

i have separate Movie and Movie 4k libraries

And what i do is add "(4k)" to the end of the movie title so its easy to see which Version is which

Not ideal but a simple work around

... that's unfortunately ineffective if the movie title is too long and gets shortened as in "Longer Movie Ti..." :(

I add 3d to the title name and use a poster that shows it to be 3d also. It only takes a minute to search through emby for a poster of the 3d version of most movies

Sounds like an interesting approach ... fake a '3D icon' by modifying the poster with an overlay graphic. Though a bit of manual work.

Anyway, call me naive but to me 3D and 2D are just two versions of the SAME movie for which one set of meta data should suffice.

Honestly 3D does not really matter to me and I often force my TV to show them in 2D, just because I am not in the mood for glasses.

I virtually never search specifically in the list of 3D movies, and if I wanted this could be solved with tags as well.

I am way past the 3D hype.

Given that, the multiple version feature suits me quite fine and if I would have any of the non-3D versions selected as default that

would be great and non of the clients should have problems with that.

I'm doing the same thing, but I use "- 3D" and "- Handbrake" to tell which movie to play depending on my player's ability to play 3D or inability to play a bluray. I don't see a pattern because on some movies 3D is first, and others show Handbrake first. Any ideas how to order them? I am using Kodi on all my devices, if that makes a difference.

There's currently no way to control the order.

The multi-version thing really is broken. So many people are using it for multiple cuts now that supporting it really ought to be a priority. If there's more than a couple of seconds difference in the runtime they should be handled differently to if runtimes are identical.

Efficiency?

I'd prefer some kind of order, otherwise I'm seeing them ordered randomly and differently between different movies. I use 4 or 5 different tags. Some kind of consistency would be nice. Alphabetical seems to be the most obvious option. Date doesn't make sense.

Yes more control is possible in future updates. Thanks.

So you want your default order and would care less for the client choosing the most compatible version?  So someone could hit play and be playing a version that could be transcoding every time do to Order?

Users want order, users want to just hit play and Emby plays the proper version for their client/connection.

This is where the Multi-version system is being used for something it was technically not designed for Resolution vs different Cuts/types 3d.

Hello,

I would like to have an alphabetical order like this.

Like this my users when they launch the movie, will always have the best quality in 1 and if they want to change they can

I use strm file. My user use android tv. and auto quality never works.

I'm using kodi as my client so I am not aware of how this is supposed to work. Does an Emby client know which one to start based on the client's specs? In kodi, I get the options every time I start a movie. I have some that are 3D capable, some that do 4K, and one that is just HD and can't play a straight bluray rip, I have to use handbrake to process it before it'll play.

Sorry I have never used Kodi, but appears you have to select your version.

Don't know if this is outdated or not
