The Roku Blue Neon for emby does not and it plays flawless. Plex App & Plex on the same TV also do not require transcoding. The RokuTV might have higher capabilities than the RokuSTB? Should we throw caution to the wind and increase all Roku DVP that have 4K to max 4096?
NomadCF 15 Posted February 23, 2019 Author Posted February 23, 2019 In the Emby apps both where tired being set to auto and 4K (UHD)/80. Plex is set to auto. Blue Neon is set to 70 Mbps for quality and auto for resolution. The built in TV roku doesn't have display "options" like the externals.

I can raise the maximum resolution for 4K to 4096 in the capabilities. This would be for any 4K capable device it would allow 4096 max resolution instead of 3840. That is the issue here. Blue Neon may not be properly checking resolution for 4K. This would allow it to "sneak" these through. It also might be that you use "Force Direct" in Blue Neon which would forgo any capabilities and just try to play it regardless of any checking if it can properly or not. I added the ability to force in Blue Neon because it was a time when model numbers were used to add capabilities. It wasn't reading any information from the device much except for the audio profile and even that was using an outdated method compared to today. Roku was not disclosing information on the device and developers were forced to know capabilities by device model number. Those days are like the medieval dark days before there was electricity. Roku now has functions which developers can use to know the exact capability of each device both video and audio. With this it is no longer relevant to track model number except for the rare exception with under-performing devices. There are a few problems with some models due to quirks in their implementation of Roku's OS version 9.0. As users come forward with issues on these devices we adapt accordingly. Plex has a similar option to allow users to over-ride their automatic detection. They allow you to force play methods because they are not confident they know Roku that well. We on the other hand feel confident in our ability to detect and are rarely wrong. In this case it is just raising the limit from 3840 to 4096 which I can have submitted today. It should make it to the app shortly after that. Thank you for reporting that the limit was too low. Tailoring the auto-detection to be perfect is a constantly evolving process.
