Dumb Question About 4k

Recommended Posts

Posted

As I foray into 4k, I've noticed that my designated media server can't seem to play back this content, locally. I have not even bothered to try streaming to other devices yet.

Specs for the server I use are as follows:

•AMD A10 7870K 3.9GHz

•Intel SSD (I believe 530 series)

•Multiple WD Black or Red series HDDs

•16gb RAM

•Windows 10 x64

I assumed this was adequate for 4k playback locally, and even for streaming it locally. What I'm finding is that I get anywhere from 10-30 seconds worth of playback before it has to buffer/catch up. This occurs in either Emby Theatre or in Kodi. The TV I tested on is not 4k, it is 1080p. Is that the reason why? Is Emby not able to do whatever transcoding or resizing is needed to play these files back, downsized to 1080 in resolution? It just doesn't seem likely that my hardware couldn't handle it, but that is why I'm here in hopes of suggestion.

Assuming it's not transcoding or remuxing, the player would have to downscale to 1080. Is it HDR, SDR, 10bit, 8bit....??? What version of Theater are you using?

I don't know whether it's transcoding or remuxing, but I've tried in both Kodi and Emby Theater.

These are the file details, I'm not sure what I'm looking at or where to locate the info you're referring to, please forgive my ignorance in that regard:

Please attach the emby server log from the playback attempt. thanks !

OK, finally got around to A) Locating the log files (it's been a long time since I needed to grab them) and B) Initiated a fresh playback of a 4k file from my media server PC.

Bear in mind that this PC is connected to a 1080p TV, and uses onboard HD video. Playback is primarily through Emby Theater, though I have also tried via Kodi. Additionally, when streaming from the same server to, say, my Chromecast HD in another room (in 4k) it works flawlessly. So I do suspect something about transcoding, I'm simply not savvy enough with the "ideal" Emby setup to know where I'm going wrong.

Much obliged if you can point me in the right direction here.

Actually, it appears you are using the desktop app. So lets look at that. Play one of these movies and take a screenshot of the stats. You can pull them up by either pressing ctrl+j or use the gear icon in the overlay.

And there's our answer. No hardware acceleration. What are your video settings? And what GPU do you have?

Hardware Acceleration requires premiere. Not just a supported card. Lets not forget that part. ^_~

He wouldn't be able to use Theater desktop without premiere. Or are you thinking about the server when transcoding? That's not what's happening, here. He's direct playing, but mpv isn't enabling hwdec.

Video is onboard video, which is part of an AMD A10 7870k Radeon R7. So, graphics are R7 series.

Not sure what you mean regarding video settings. If you can tell me where to pull the info from I can do that.

And after a quick bit of research, you may need to use copyback. So try Auto (copyback) and/or D3D (copyback)

Latest driver installed as of this morning. Tried all 3 suggestions for hardware acceleration mode, none worked to improve. Of the 3, D3D copy back seemed the best, but the framerate is still awful. [emoji17]

I'm reading that there are issues with Radeon. So I want to run some tests with you. You have time?

Absolutely. I appreciate your help! If it's easier, you can PM me.

I'm attaching a preconfigured build of mpv. Unzip the folder, anywhere. In the folder you'll see mpv.exe, double click on it, then drag 'n' drop your movie on it. It will play, automatically. To pull up the stats, press shift+i. If you can screenshot that, I'd be grateful. Also, a log file will be created in the movie folder.

Definitely an improvement:

But no hwdec. In that folder, you'll see another folder called 'portable_config'. In there you'll a text file call mpv.conf. Open that, and change the line 'gpu-api=opengl' to 'gpu-api=auto' , and try again.

That appears to have degraded the framerate again, playback is about as "choppy" now as when played via Emby Theater client:

Can you attach the log? It's called mpv log.txt, and it should be in the movie folder.
