Purple overlay

Hi,

I am having a strange issue with emby. Several different use cases outlined below. I have a lot of 4K videos that I have tried. Now when I try streaming them to Chromecast ultra I get a purple/pinkish overlay when I run from the browser on the local machine. I am running embly on Ubuntu 18.04. This overlay issue doesn't happen on 1080 or lower resolution files.

When I connect remotely from Windows Chrome to Embly on Linux:

I don't get any cast options even though Chrome itself sees the devices. Also I can play the file locally (in browser) for about 1 minute then it freezes. All files are mkv and I have tried both HEVC and x264 encoded. If I turn off transcoding all works fine in browser, still can't cast though. I am using a Nvidia P5000 card in the Linux machine. When I use the Chromecast feature from Chrome in Windows instead of the cast button in emby then I can cast ok to Chromecast. However when the question comes up if I want to optimize the cast and I press yes I get the pink/purple overlay, if I click no I get normal colours.

When I connect remotely from Android to Embly on Linux:

Works fine playing local. However when I cast sometimes I get the purple overlay, sometimes it crashes the chromecast (which reboots) and sometimes I just get a grey screen. No matter is transcoding is on or off.

When I connect remotely from Nvidia Shield Pro to Embly on Linux:

Can't connect. Says server unresponsive. (can be net issue)

When I connect remotely from Android to Plex on Linux:

The same Linux machine runs Plex server. It works fine from the plex app on my phone when I watch local or cast to Chromecast. Note Plex doesn't support hardware encoding and transcoding fully on Linux.

When I connect remotely from Nvidia Shield Pro to Plex on Linux:

Takes some time but movie runs fine and can even enable subtitles which I can't with other methods as the movie stutters.

Emby on Windows:

I even installed Emby and Plex on Windows 10. I get the same results from Emby on Windows. I tried both NVDEC and DXVA2. Other than better performance with the latter the result was the same. In the Windows machine I have a 1080ti.

Plex on Windows:

This works fine as on Linux but with less CPU as Plex Windows supports transcoding and encoding fully.

I obviously am just guessing but it seems like this is related to the Chromecast implementation in Emby.

The reason I decided to purchase Emby was to have the hardware encoding fully supported on Linux.

I can provide logs but would like to know the specific logs you need and the use cases. The most important for me are:

1. Removing pink overlay when casting 4K

2. Working transcoding when watching in browser (no 1 minute freeze)

3. Finding all cast devices from Emby cast button.

What Emby app are you playing with on the TV?

Hi,

I am using the Android app from my phone to cast to TV.

Is this using Chromecast on the TV, or Dlna?

Hi.     Chromecast.

Ok, as a test, if you were to turn off hardware transcoding, does that have any impact?

Just to add my 2d worth...

I am having the same issue.

Android latest version (13th Feb) of Android App is casting to Chromecast Ultra (from Emby 3.5.3 or Emby 3.5.2 both as dockers on unraid) HEVC 4k always purple (I'm guessing actually magenta) at full brightness so nothing else visible except pale shadows in the background.

Chromecast is brand new, only arrived this week, went through it's software update during setup.

Worth noting - I checked against a Sony TV (AF8) with built-in Chromecast Ultra and no such purple overlay.

Also - both my servers have Hardware Transcoding set to None.

Very glad to see someone else having same issue (well, sort of...)

Hopefully someone might understand what's goiing on

Happy to debug etc, open to suggestions.

If I don't get somewhere in a couple of weeks, I'll have to send the CCU back, can't afford to keep it if it donesn't work!

Just did some investigating, and found a useful thing which solved this one...

I had used the USB power out from the projector, and it worked when sending a file from android to cast to the chromecast, stuttery but it worked (no purple).

There was a message on the bottom of the screen "not using the supplied PSU, please do so" (or words to that effect).

As a techie I tend to ignore impertinent messages like that, 5V 3A is 5V 3A in anyone's money...especially if it's just a plugtop psu.

However, perhaps the code which specifically recognises whether you're using the google PSU also reduces performance or something, because as soon as I used the google PSU, it worked first time. Google getting a bit Apple-ish maybe?

I'd like to do more experimenting, but this has cost more time than I can afford, so probably won't.

Unfortunately it does mean that you clearly cannot use any other PSU. so if it dies, you're f*****ed, go buy a new one. Also - it's powered on all of the time, not just when the projector is switched on - which is fundamentally sub-optimal.

I don't like that sort of thing much.

But it's working for now, stop moaning.

...and so it goes...

Trouble with the chromecast ultra is - it's expecting the hdmi device to handle the sound...

Unfortunately most projectors don't do sound.

So now what?

Buy (yet) another amp which understands & can pass thru 4k/60Hz ? Not bl**dy likely, that's both expensive & makes my current amp redundant & worthless.

How about one of those little boxes which extract the sound, pass through at 4k/60hz and outputs in optical & stereo...?

Good idea I thought...

Wrong.

Now I can have a great picture (no purple screen) if I connect the chromecast-ultra (CCA) with the provided psu directly to the projector but I'll get no sound -OR-

Use the little 4k/60hz passthrough extraction box I just bought and have sound, but with the purple screen - nice.

Yet the 4K televisions, (even the one with CCA built-in) work fine.

So what makes Emby's signal different to Plex ? Plex doesn't seem to make the screen purple...?!

Not a good result - not happy.

Can you please attach an emby server log and Ffmpeg log example? Thanks.
