Why does the server query my IP address and call home?

Possibly half a reason. What's the ping for?

You know not all ppl have the tech for figuring this out (differences between external/internal ip ports and all that i mean) - And by that i mean it's easier for the devs is the info is already there!

 

And for the 2nd thing i would guess it has something to do with the donation status. (Only a guess on that though)
