Transcoding to RAM

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have Emby server running on Debian and was looking at shifting the transcoding to RAM as I have an overly powered m/c for what I need and I have 32gb of RAM in which on average 1% is being used so thought it makes sense to shift transcoding to RAM (as it will also store the live TV timeshift I believe there too?) so was wondering I can see the folder with WINSCP "/dev/shm" and wondered is this tmpfs (i.e. the ram folder in a nutshell) so if I point Emby to that folder for transcoding then it will be stored on RAM? Just wondering as a lot of folk have been mentioning configuring RAM disks and was wondering why if the folder is already there (if that is of course correct)

Thanks.

Thanks :) although it didn't really answer my question of is the folder /dev/shm already RAM storage?

yes, albeit a fairly new addition to linux.
