Wilky13 21 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) Currently have my server and HTPC all in one case. Built it back in 2011, so it is running on a Z68 MoBo with a i3-2100 in a nMediaPC Case. Inside the case is 1 4TB Seagate for Recorded and Live TV (yes I still run WMC in Windows 7), 3 5TB Toshiba using tRAID from FlexRaid for parity and to pool the drives for 9.6TB total, and Windows 7/Emby/Programs on a 256GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD. In 2014, I built a higher power PC in an old Power Mac G5 Case. Basically I ripped out the insides and chopped up an Antec case in order to mount an ATX MoBo, hard drives, and power supply in it. It is an i7-4790k Devils' Canyon on an Asus Z97-A Mobo, and 2 256GB Samsung 850 SSDs (1 for OS X and 1 for Windows 10). I do most of my video transcoding on this higher power machine (mostly converting everything to mp4 with a 2-ch AAC and 6-ch AC3 audio streams so it is Apple friendly). Also have it hooked up to 2 x 20" Apple Cinema displays. Bluetooth Apple keyboard and mouse work as well on the Hackintosh. The TV in the bedroom has a Ceton Echo to watch live and recorded TV as well as movies through Emby for WMC (mp4s play fine on the Echo, but not mkvs). The other TV is outside, it uses a Xbox 360 as an extender instead of an Echo so it plays live and recorded TV and mkv/mp4 movies TV shows. However, mostly use the Roku Emby app on the TV for movies. JeremyFr79 228 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I'll post better pictures once the rack and patch panels are all cleaned up and looking on point lol
JeremyFr79 228 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 The cabling is so bad! Yeah yeah, my wife works from home so I had to throw everything up as quick as possible and then all the other projects that you take on when buying a new home (painting etc) takes priority etc, so cleaning it all up has been on the back burner it's working that's all that matters right now lol

Did you see how well I did my cabling, in my last picture? True artistry! lol ... I aspire to have a system that rivals yours

JeremyFr79 228 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 One bright side is that between the servers and the freezer the garage stays a pretty constant 60-65 degrees during the winter, This summer it got fairly warm in the garage but was still within safe threshholds for servers.
Guest asrequested Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I'm looking forward to seeing it when you have it the way you want it
JeremyFr79 228 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 This is one of my racks I did at work recently. It's not perfect but compared to the rat's nest it was before it's a metric crap ton better.
Guest asrequested Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) Pretty nice! Hopefully I'll have mine finished by the end of Thursday. I intend to make it as pretty as I am able. I opted for black cat6 cables, so they'd blend with the rack. I'll post pics, when it's finished. Edited December 20, 2016 by Doofus

colejack 30 Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 I've got that same 846, Love it! Mines only the SAS1 version though. Doesn't matter unless you fill the bays. Mine has one bad port so I can't max it out even I wanted to. The SAS2 versions are way over-priced now, sellers know people want them and set high prices.

I honestly can't remember which one I have, but I had to bypass the controller on it anways and run it as an expander since it didn't want to get along with my RAID Card (PERC H700 pulled from a Dell) It's running 24 3TB drives without issue in RAID50, I'm sure I'm not getting as much performance as I could out of it, but sequential READ/WRITE's max around 500-600MBps

Nice, sadly I could have got gigabit at my old house, but in the new one we're stuck with Comcast for now, a couple of providers are starting to bring fiber out my way but it's gonna be a few years still till it reaches me so I'm stuck at 180/30 for now, but it keeps me happy for the time being.
Guest asrequested Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 It's a little late, but I finally got my Christmas tree, up. How do you like my twinkly lights? Cheers Guys! Merry Christmas! 6
sansoo22 11 Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 @ that is a great looking tree! You have any interior pics of the bottom rack mount case? I also love that Fractal case. I use nothing but Fractal cases for all of my home towers. I currently have a Define XL R2 for my unRAID server and an Define R5 for my gaming rig. I really wish Fractal would get into rack mount solutions. Does that D-Link switch have POE?

I picked it up cheap, on ebay. I'll probably be upgrading to a 10G switch, in the not too distant future. I'll probably be changing the Fractal case for a rackmount. I'm looking at another Norco case. Most likely, this one. I'm probably going to sell my NZXT 630 and the Fractal.

I had a Norco way back in the day, found the Supermicros to be much higher quality and you can find em all over Ebay for great prices. And they're true "enterprise grade" built like tanks and built to last. Redundant power supplies etc.
