Because this looks really weird, to be honest.

did you take note of my previous reply , Sir?

it would be good if there was no background at all for subtitles when turned off.. you know, just like the director name and the genres, which are clickable but do not have any background

it also happens in the emby web client... it looks pretty bad. please correct this:

I just realized why the subtitles background is elongated in case of some movies. The width of the grey block automatically defaults to the widest selectable option, even though it is not selected.

Hi.  Yes, that is a standard practice in UI design.  You don't want a particular control "expanding and contracting" at different times based on its content.

So, are you saying you will stick with this and nothing can be done about it?,,, like replacing the grey background with a, say, transparent bg?

Now, one could argue that if there was a transparent background, nobody would know if subtitles exist for that movie/show. for them i my reply would be, so is the case with genres and director names... you don't know whether they are clickable since there are no backgrounds behind them. Yes, they are highlighted in bold letters.  The same could be the solution for subitltes, don't you think so, Sir? Solution:

Subtitles: Off

Why I am emphasizing on this issue, becuase, as you can see in the picture in the OP, in some cases the background is way too elongated and looks ugly.

If it were transparent, how would you know that you can click on it?

The correct response is to make genres and directors more obviously clickable, not to make subtitles and audio tracks just as hidden away.

Genres actually take you off the screen and somewhere else, so it's a little different. A long time ago they used to be a different color - green, to make it obvious they are clickable.

Could we go back to that? Yes, but nowadays nearly everything is clickable that the color can get overwhelming, especially on episode screens where in addition to all of this, the season and series names can also be clicked.

well, sir, i respect your point; but they are already clickable "enough", plus when you hover your cursor or use your remote over the name and genres, a smooth, visible, underline appears.

A link to another place and a control that you interact with on the screen are two different animals.  You need to make it visually obvious that this is a control that allows you to select multiple values.  In fact, when it doesn't have multiple values, then it shows as just text (transparent background) - indicating that it is just that and not a control with different choices.

This is all pretty standard UI design.
