Slow to load but otherwise works?

I thought i was done getting emby to work and had everything running how i wanted it to for one day before i actually started to put some files onto.

Now i have around 4TB of films/tv shows in it i find that when i go to the emby web interface my whole server grinds to a halt as my hdd gets thrashed and i have to wait about 5 minutes before emby loads and lets me see the home page. If i then try and access a library the hdd  gets thrashed again before after a while the page loads displaying the library's contents. Once it's loaded it plays the files fine, but that initial loading period is proving impossible to work with.

Just in case it matters, before i go any further i feel i should explain i installed emby via swizzin along with nginx, rutorrent etc in order to get my media server working.

I thought it might be a ram issue at first and the needed ram was being generated on the hdd but after i increased the ram to 12GB and monitored its usage the ram doesn't go above 2.5GB so it doesn't seem to be that.

The hdd is standard one, not ssd. Installing an ssd isn't an option.

What my main question therefore is, is this normal behaviour for such a large amount of data when running on a normal  hdd? And if it is, is there anything i can do to increase embys performance via config settings rather than changing the servers hardware?

Any help/advice appreciated.

Did you just add the 4tb of data/video? If so it will take a while to scan.

I have about 5tb of data which was working fine on the previous stable build (3.5.3?). Once I updated to 4, it took 2 days for the scan to complete. I had to manually rescan the metadata on 300 movies to get it to finish.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm still having the problem but having looked at the logs i can't say i want to upload them to the internet.

They contain my ip address, open port the server is using, user name, not to mention its listing the file names of some of my files like family photos that have full names and partial addresses in some cases. Seems like a security risk to me.

Is there not a way to sanitize them?

To further add to the issue at hand:

I was wondering if upgrading from version 3.3.1.0 to the latest would help in terms of improving the servers performance.  I think i read somewhere about emby changing to .Net from mono-sgen or something like that making it more efficient?

I'd like to update to the latest version whether it would help with performance or not. I've tried updating already before but while the install was successful and emby 'worked' i could no longer access my Data due to the file permissions i'd setup previously no longer working.

The problem i found was that rutorrent needs the group permission to my Data folder to be set to www-data and the newer version of emby needs it to be set to the emby group. They both can access the folder when the right group permission is given but i can't get them to work together.

Previously i had the group permission set to my systems username which was part of the www-data and emby groups. That configuration no longer seems to work though so i'm left stumped as to how to give the group permissions both programs need to the same folder since it seems like i can only set 1 group per folder.

In regards to scanning the library: I believe i have done a full scan, which took over 8 hours, but i was wondering if i need to like also give the system some time to 'adjust' itself afterwards or something?

The other thing i was wondering about is whether saving metadata as nfo is better or worse for performance?

I'm assuming what's taking the time for the data to load is that its loading all the screen grabs of all the files I've got which has created a 2.5GB metadata folder filled with over 21000 files and a library database file that's 870MB in size.

Is everything taking so long simply because it should given the amount of files emby needs to load in order for me to see all those thumb images or is there an actual issue? That's really what i need to know i think. I don't want to try and fix a problem that isn't an actual a problem that can be fixed and simply a limit of the system or something.

You can always PM them to me, but yes, newer versions of the server will perform considerably better than 3.3. Thanks.
