Emby/Android - Music: sorty by release date not working properly

Hi,

I have an issue with sorting in Emby (Android)

usually my default view for Music is Albums, sorted by release date, ascending

which currently looks like this on my Emby windows client (where everything works perfectly fine):

but on my Emby Android client (Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi Pad 4) it is looking like this:

it should have the same sort order as on my windows client since it is the same library and the settings are exactly the same

but still although it seems to be ascending on first sight, it is not - e.g. the first screen already shows albums from 2014 although I currently have 8 albums from 2018 (and all these items are properly tagged - else it wouldn't work on the windows client)

it is also not in order if I try sorting by release date, descending

am I missing something? could somebody please look into this?

BR, Alex

Hi there, please try updating to the latest version of Emby Server, thanks.

That will make the windows app look like android so that they are consistent. Then the next question is, do you have albums that are not tagged with any release year?

Hi Luke, thanks a lot for taking the time to check this

I now updated to the latest version and my windows client now behaves the same:

and I also checked all of my mp3 files via mp3tag. Each file includes the respective "Year". there was not one single file where the year was missing

(I also checked for possible typos or invalid year-entries, but everything is fine)

so something must have changes with the server file update, because it was working fine before (also on android I did not encounter this up until recently)

if you edit the metadata of the albums, do they have years assigned?

ok, I think I just found out why it is not working. if I check the album metadata I can see that THE STRUTS/Young and dangerous (which I would have expected in the top 8, because this album is from 2018) only has the "Jahr" ("Year") = 2018 tag, but the release date is missing:

seems like emby is differentiating between "Release Date" and "Year" ..... where is emby taking the "Release Date" information from?
I checked in mp3tag but I couldn't find anything resembling this information - I just found the "Year" tag

and emby does not offer a sort option by "Year" - so that's why I always assumed it is the same

Both values come from the earliest values from the tracks. try refreshing the metadata on the album and see if that fills it in.

it is working fine if I add a release date manually via emby web client to an album

I tried to automatically refresh the metadata, but that didn't do the trick (and honestly I would prefer to use my own metadata - I always add all data with mp3tag)

but something must have changed in emby with the current version, because I did not encounter this behavior previously

is there any way I can add this missing metadata via mp3tag?

it will use your metadata, based on what i said previously. So yes you could try embedding the information into your tracks.

I tried adding an additional tag RELEASETIME so some of my files but emby did not pick it up.

which mp3 tag needs to be there for this to work?

I think it is releasedate
