4.0.0.2 pixelated image issue

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

First off, hats off to the Emby team for bringing out the new update. Lots of work has went in to making this be as smooth of a transition/upgrade as possible!

I haven't used Emby enough since the Server upgraded to 4.0.0.2 to know if this happens all the time or maybe just after/during a seek. Happens for just a second or 2 then back to normal.

(Intel Graphics HD 4000, Windows 10 64-Bit)

Does this only happen with hardware acceleration?

Posted (edited)

Ok so I disabled Hardware Acceleration and couldn't get the pixelated/blurry images like I was getting above. Wow does the CPU take a pretty huge hit while transcoding with Hardware Acceleration disabled! Much more so with pre-recorded material versus Live TV.

With H.A. disabled, the CPU would hit 90-100% at times with 2-3 transcoded streams (pre-recorded compressed material), while only 15-20% with 3 streams (pre-recorded compressed material) and H.A. enabled.

So, for now, I will deal with the goofy image issue in exchange for the major CPU reduction of having H.A. enabled!

Edited Jan 17 - I have disabled Hardware Acceleration. Couldn't stand the constant skipping/sputtering with Live TV. Performance (for me) is night & day better with H.A. disabled.

I wanted to mention that in addition to the above issue with pre-recorded content, Live TV transcoding is not stable with Hardware Acceleration enabled for me. I get nonstop hiccups and freezes with my Intel HD Graphics 4000 setup. With H.A. disabled the sputtering/hiccups go away after about 30-60 sec.

I edited my above post to include this too.

I have the same problem, HW transcoding results in decoding artifacts. Using SW there is no artifacts.

Emby Server (4.0.0.2) is on a i7-4790K (HD Graphics 4600) running Windows 7, no external GPU installed.

The server computer is also not connected to any monitor, if that may be of any importance.

Do you have Live TV setup? Can you test that too?

I was browsing around and came across the thread below. Is it required to have a monitor (or HDM Dummy Plug) plugged into my on-board graphics slot to get Hardware Acceleration to work properly?

I currently do not have a monitor plugged in since this machine is only used for Plex and Emby. When I need to connect to it, I VNC into it from another computer on the LAN.

@@cptlores, let's look at an example. Please see how to report a media playback issue. thanks !

@@troyhough - you should definitely retry with having a monitor connected.

You can also check BIOS settings regarding your onboard graphics (e.g. memory assignment).

Then, you could try what happens when transcoding without scaling, I wonder whether this might be related to the scaling filter...

Also, the logs are showing a seemingly outdated driver version: 10.18.10.4885

I'll try it again with a monitor plugged in. Does the monitor need to be powered on at all times or can it be powered down (but plugged in). Just thinking long-term fix....

@@softworkz,

Driver update crossed my mind too. I updated to 10.18.10.5059 on the 16th @ 133pm which was just after sending you the initial logs.

I have done lots of testing since the update and noticed no improvement, unfortunately.

I will try again with a monitor when i get some free time, hopefully tomorrow!

Another thing you could try is to disable hw decoding and use hw encoding only (which is the harder part).

That won't solve the actual problem but it might get proper results at least.

I did a lot of testing the last 24 hours. Tried with a monitor plugged, not plugged in. Just HW encoding enabled and the rest disabled. Results seemed to be the same no matter what I did. The same sputtering with Live TV and green pixelated images with pre-recorded content.

I have disabled Hardware Acceleration for now until it's ready for prime time. I will be glad to test it at anytime, just let me know!

PS: A "workaround" for Live TV sputtering (with H.A. enabled OR disbled) is simply hitting pause for 3-5 seconds after the tuned channel starts playing, then resuming. I'm not a coding guy but would think this is potentially a very easy fix for the Emby team!?!?!

@@Luke, did you see my post above? i did.

try with monitor, check

check bios, confirm onboard graphics enabled, check

make sure on the latest HD Graphics driver, check

disable hardware encoding and use hardware encoding only, check

"try without scaling"?? not sure what this is?

Live TV sputter too?

What are you using for a video card?
