A bit of an irritant involving adding to collection and other actions while browsing

When I am browsing my library (Using FireFox or Chrome on Windows 10) and I choose to add a movie to a collection (as well as many other actions but not all) and I click on the three dots and choose "Add to collection and add the selected movie to a collection instead of returning to the movie list where I left off (at the movie just before or after the one I selected) I am jumped to the top of the current page and I have to scroll back to where I was to continue browsing my movies.

It seems to me that after almost any action I should be returned back exactly where I left off and any other action is counter intuitive. Even if I choose to refresh the screen I should stay where I am in whatever list I am in and not be returned to the very first page. That is currently if I am browsing at the letter "M" (or any other letter) and I refresh the screen, say to show a newly set poster, I am returned all the way back to the "#" at the very first of my library.

I do not think either behavior that jumps me to another location well away from where I am is at all correct.

Of course I understand that this is probably a case of "That is the way it has always been done" but I cannot conceive of any justification other than "it is easier on the programmer."

I would request that this behavior be changed to be more intuitive or at least the first action I mentioned be fixed.

Thank You.

Is there a lack of interest in this or am I doing something basically wrong or is there some action I can do to avoid getting a reset to the top of the current list or even all the way back to the first of my library.

Just as an aside: Plex does not do this at all. I can edit meta data add an item to a collection or just about anything else in Plex and I stay where I am in my browsing. I am very surprised that Emby has this obvious weakness.

I hear you. I also find this annoying when making playlists or collections. I don't recall it doing so with the previous version of Emby.

It is annoying and I have been seeing it for some time now.

Although it has been a really short time it is unusual for no one at Emby to respond to this kind of report even if that response is:

"We are aware of the issue and are working on it."

or

"We are aware of the issue and it is fixed in the next release."

or

"What you are seeing is known and expected behavior,"

or

"We cannot reproduce this on our test systems."

or

"We need to have more info to determine what is happening."

or even

"We designed it that way and it is doing exactly what we believe it should."

Emby almost always responds in some way to threads like this in very short order. Maybe I have done something to anger the Emby gods and they are punishing me for my transgression(s). If that is the case: Is there some ritual or chant or dance I can perform to atone whatever blasphemous utterance I have allowed out of my keyboard.

I abase myself before the alter of Emby and humbly request forgiveness for my sins! :wacko:B):o:P

Sorry no one has responded.

This is a reproducible issue and has been reported in another topic.

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/67456-correcting-primary-image-leaps-list-forward

Yes this issue is being look into.

That thread seems to have been reporting a jump forward while what I am reporting is a jump backward.

That is if I edit or add to a collection "Harry Potter" movies I will often jump back to the area of "Fantastic Four" or further after finishing.

The two may be related but they do not seem the same unless we have different definitions of forward and backward.

I just finished updating to the beta server 4.0.0.1 and now I have the jump forward problem instead of the jump back I was having.

Jumping forward is actually a much greater problem than jumping back.

This is NOT fixed in the 4.0.0.1 beta so I have little confidence it will be fixed before release.

It makes editing metadata a much bigger chore that it would be if the behavior was just correct.

This is the funniest thing I've read anywhere in a while, you should be working as a writer (come to think of it, nothing says you're not already).

Keep up the good spirit, its good for you and for everyone else around you.

Almost forgot: As a very crude work around you could have 2 separate browser side by side (dual monitor implied) and keep one in list view and perform edit on the other windoiw.

Looking at the "add to collection" option you get different results when selection via item context menu and multi-select add to collection.

When using item context menu the list screen is refreshed and you jumps to the top, letter of name added to a collection.

When using multi-select there is no refresh just a pop-up item added and item still remains in list until you manually refresh screen.  Basically the item is queued for next list refresh.

When using multi-select there is no refresh just a pop-up item added and item still remains in list until you manually refresh screen.  Basically the item is queued for next list refresh.

But if I use multi-select and select two items side by side and add them to a collection (or even just use multi-select to select only one item) after adding the selections to a collection or creating a new collection I am jumped several lines up the screen.

There is simply a bug in the lack of logic that is used to determine where you were in the list.

Also, in the event of an automatic refresh some effort should be made to keep you where you were in the list when the selection was made.

There is zero logic in the current behavior. No matter if I make a collection or edit metadata or any other action there is absolutely no good reason to jump forward, backward or return to the top. Jumping around in the list should be the user's choice NOT Emby's and certainly not based on any automatic refreshing action.

In fact if I choose to refresh the current screen I should remain where I was when I chose to refresh and not jumped all the way back to the top.

What currently happens is that if I am browsing my library at "W" and refresh the screen I am returned all the way back to the very top so as to be browsing ant the numbers entries. "#"  This is a VERY poor choice and I believe it should be fixed!

Thanks for the report. We'll take a look.

Hi, this might be an issue in Emby Server 4.5, but if so, it's resolved in the upcoming 4.6. Thanks.

Is it fixed in the latest Beta Luke?  Because I have been having this issue lately for a while but have not perused my collection lately so I actually forgot about this annoying behavior until this thread was resurrected.

Tested, no problem found here.

This is still happening to me as well in the current beta.

Hi Luke

Could this problem be fixed in next update? Thanks

Do you really need more detail than this?

From the first post in this thread:

If you want more info be specific what you want and I am sure that I, and others, will make every attempt to provide it.

I suggest you look at fixing the "Screen refresh jumps to the top of the library" bug first. If that is fixed then I think it may also fix a lot of other related problems.

If I refresh the screen while browsing movies I should remain exactly where I was before the refresh. It even seems pretty simple: Save the current position, refresh the screen, use the saved info to return to where we were prior to the refresh. Right not it does not do that most of the time but rather jumps to the first item in my library. I should ONLY be jumped to the first item if I specifically ask for it. Refresh, adding to a collection or renaming the movie should NEVER jump to the first item. Even following the renamed item after a rename is wrong. My relative position in my movies should NEVER change unless I ask it to.

So what other info do you need?? The description I gave is 100% repeatable for me and I think that anyone with a large library browsing their movies over half way and refreshing the screen will see this bug. It is not hard to reproduce and it is repeatable on both my PC based servers and the server I run on my Shield.

As i wrote prior to this,  When scrolling down the list of movies, Emby suddenly "jumps" back to #. Its very very annoying. And If I refresh, add a movie or renaming, it also jumps back to # It shouldnt do that. So that Luke, is the problem in detail. Thanks
