kazamee223 0 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Hello, I'm currently using Kodi installed in Nvidia Shield but since I watch on different devices (Shield / PC / Laptop) I don't want to maintain an instance on every single device so I was looking for something with a server/client model. Emby seems like it is the way to go since it is open source which I like. So my plan was to install Emby on my Synology DS916+ and clients on nvidia shield and linux mint desktop. I've read that emby needs read/write permissions to the media folder. I don't need to edit tags or stuff like that. I just have my movie.mkv files in a folder and want them to play.I want to keep the control of that folder by myself. Why exactly does emby need write permissions? Is there an option to install emby server in read-only mode? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also on the Emby Premiere page (paid) I've seen the "Theater Mode". "The latest and greatest Emby app for your TV." Does that mean I need to buy Emby Premiere to use a client on Nvidia Shield? Thanks in advance
Happy2Play 9785 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Permissions pertain to metadata, so you would not enable writing nfo or image with media when you setup each library. Premiere is dependent on the client/app. https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Emby-Premiere-Feature-Matrix
kazamee223 0 Posted January 5, 2019 Author Posted January 5, 2019 On Kodi metadata was gathered once and then stored somewhere but not in the file/folder itself. I'm fine with that. And I don't need nfos. And regarding Premiere... as far as I can see in this table I have to pay anyway otherwise I can't do shit (expect watch 1min of my files). Well... I don't know if I'm right here then. Guess I'll keep Kodi somehow.
Happy2Play 9785 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 I don't use Kodi but I am sure some will come along and explain it better. https://emby.media/emby-for-kodi.html
rbjtech 5285 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 "I've read that emby needs read/write permissions to the media folder." It does not - My media remote shares/folders are 'Read Only' to emby - but you must not select the 'keep metadata in the media folders' option or it will not work. By default - it keeps all the metadata locally to the emby server installation anyway - so as long as your remote shares are readable (read only) then emby will work just fine.

Yes this is correct, thanks !
