That's correct.

it is a symlink; actual file is in the parent directory. I've set it up to limit Emby from seeing all the unneccessary directories and archives.

Ok I apologize but unfortunately that's not going to work at this time because we are blocked due to limitations in the .NET Core runtime:

The reason it works with transcoding is because ffmpeg ends up processing the file.

I can fix this on my end - but before that, I suppose a hard link would work as there is no difference between hard links and the origin file?

Ok. problem solved. I've reshuffled stuff and replaced them with hard links
