Gotta agree on poor choice on trailers.. ended up looking at one linked from youtube and it was horrible and not even a proper trailer.. thankfully on the column on the right was an official trailer so it just required a click. Of course then I did edit the XML and change it. What would really impress me almost as much would be the ability to stream those trailers directly from youtube into WMC / MBC because currently I have to go to the web UI of the MBServer and into details of a movie to get to a trailer for that movie.
Tikuf 663 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 ability to stream those trailers directly from youtube into WMC / MBC While I agree it would be nice it will not happen in the foreseeable future as it is in direct violation of the youtube t&c.

Not trying to stir the pot, but how is it ok to stream the videos into the MBS UI but not WMC MBC and yet I can go to my WD TVLive SMP and watch Youtube? Hardly seems fair Is it possible to have a "Trailer" Icon button when we mouse over items in the MBS UI instead of having to go to details perhaps? Edited April 24, 2014 by Tolerant
gcw07 347 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 The server is showing it with an embed youtube video, which is allows by their terms of services. And just because something else is violating the terms of services doesn't make it right. It is still a violation and just not something we are going to do.
Tikuf 663 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Just to clarify the dash uses the embedded yt player to access the video which is allowed (just so they can give you advertisements etc). To stream to clients we would need the actual url of the video and doing that is against yt tos. Some of the mobile clients could pass off the url to a yt application and mbt may at some stage be able to embed the player but this is not an option for mbc. Hope that clears it up
ebr 16179 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Yeah, we should be able to eventually get these to play in just about everything except MBC because all the mobile clients and MBT should have access to a sanctioned YT player of some sort. WMC just never is going to have one because it has been left for dead by just about everyone except us.
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) I really don't care about streaming or direct play or anything like that for this request. This request is to have a field labeled "Trailer" where I can input the path to a trailer. This field would be in the Metadata Editor and would be saved with the XML. Youtube is not the only source of trailers. A field holding a string of text leading to a location is not a violation of anyone's terms of service. Edited April 24, 2014 by Wayne Luke 3

Youtube is not the only source of trailers. A field holding a string of text leading to a location is not a violation of anyone's terms of service. You are correct - we got a little off-topic there. Back on this topic though - if we make this editable, we'd have to do more than just that. We'd need to be able to specify exactly what kind of URL it is. For instance, the current contents are YouTube embed URLs and must be treated a certain way to be played. Different players and content from different sources may need other special handling by the app trying to play it as well. For instance, just like you couldn't just stream a YT embed url it also wouldn't work to just stream an url from Apple Trailers either - you have to, again, use the proper player and headers etc. So, this is a valid request but it may be more complicated than simply making the field editable.
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) The url can be included in a standardized control regardless of source if they provide an embed code. The YouTube's embed code is this: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/npvJ9FTgZbM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Here is a similar trailer from another site: <iframe width="450" height="242" src="http://v.traileraddict.com/82515" allowfullscreen="true" webkitallowfullscreen="true" mozallowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no"></iframe> Or another site: <iframe id="cs006_710607" src="http://cms.springboardplatform.com/embed_iframe/71/video/710607/cs006/comingsoon.net/10/1/" width="625" height="377" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe> All three of the above will play directly in the browser if you put the value of the src parameter into your browser's address bar. Most have the same or similar parameters so you can build a standard iframe call to display them. Clients would then be able to take those same iframe parameters to create a seamless frame within the client or play the video fullscreen. Edited April 24, 2014 by Wayne Luke 1
