Spaceboy 2573 Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 Nothing dramatic. I had some ransomware sitting on one of my machines. Defender scanned the machine and found nothing. Then Sophos scanned, found it and removed it. I likely downloaded it from somewhere. Fortunately it hadn't phoned home, yet. Other measures that I have may have prevented that. So it got taken care of before it did any damage. Thankfully. But the point is that Defender didn't step up.You can’t say that for certain

jachin99 88 Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 Many of us are running Windows Media Center (WMC) and that one only exists officially in Win 7. Therefore Win 7 will run on my HTPC with added 3rd party security protection plus Acronis True Image until either I am looking at the grass from the wrong side or have no more use for a Home Theater. Until then Win 10 for me can be stuck where the sun don't shine. I don't need it because most of my day to day activity is done these days from Android tablets and smartphones. My media servers run UnRaid and my QNAP NASs run Linux. No need for an expensive Surface Pro with Win 10. Sorry MS but you blew this a long time ago when you decide to just abandon the mega lead you had in the mobile market. +1, there's no end in sight for my running windows 7. About 2 years back I spent almost a grand on a HP win 10 laptop. I had lots of memory, and I7, it was foldable, had the touchscreen and all. Now MS support for that might end with their support of build 1803. 1809 requires DCH drivers, and everyone in the chain has pushed up support for this Except HP!! I have read some reports of user trying to manually install 1809 on these laptops, but I am yet to see any success stories. If no one figures out how to update this machine then new builds of Windows won't be a part of my life from here on out. I still think it will get worked out somewhere but its a pretty crappy situation to pay so much for so little support thus far.
CharleyVarrick 283 Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 (edited) In all reputable anti-virus/malware top 10 list I've read in the past 2 decades, I don't remember Defender ever clinching a top 5 results.Even against freeware only competition. By MS's own admission, it kicks-in automatically if no other anti malware is detected as running, and bugs out as soon as the 3rd party sftwr runs. No need to even set a default. Windows even used to suggest to the user a list of available free and premium solution. Edited January 12, 2019 by jlr19
CharleyVarrick 283 Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 Everyone has heard the misleading statement "mac (or Linux) don't get virus", contrary to Windows. In a Mac or Linux, you are by default a user with very limited rights. In Windows, you're admin by default. 2 different approach that yields vastly different results. Don't want problems with windows? On day 1, create and use, from this point on, a user account with limited rights, Problem solved.
