Identify & Better metadata recognition

Renaming 600+ folders is something I really don't want to do. Filebot might be able to manage it, but even then it would rename based off the movie in the folder.

It wouldn't help with trilogies, which may contain Die Hard (year)/Die Hard (year).mkv, Die Hard (year)/Die Hard2 (year).mkv, etc.

There should be an option to disable folder identification and just use file names.

That's the ideal because it offers the most consistent results for the least amount of maintenance.  The naming wiki covers a variety of alternatives.

I do have to strongly recommend against doing series in the same folder at the least.  Having them separate, or all the the same folder with your other titles if that's your preference, is better as the software-created collections are offer more flexibility than ones created on disk.

Ended up moving all trilogies into the main folder and renaming all of the 600+ folders with filebot which fixed the metadata issues.

Right, when a movie is in it's own folder, that's when we use the folder name for metadata lookup purposes.

The ideal is each movie in its own folder with a name that matches the title in TMDB.  So \\MovieServer\Movieshare\Conan the Barbarian (1984)\Conan the Barbarian (1984).mkv.

Variants like director's cuts or 10-bit color versions go in the same folder together using the naming convention for multiple versions detailed on the wiki.  So, for example, I have both \\Movieserver\Movieshare\Once Upon a Time in America (1984)\Once Upon a Time in America (1984) - Director's Cut.mkv and \\Movieserver\Movieshare\Once Upon a Time in America (1984)\Once Upon a Time in America (1984) - Theatrical.mkv.  In the client app one movie shows and I can select the desired version from a drop-down before I play it.

Emby and Kodi use 99% the same naming convention for movies & TV shows, which gives their respective users some leeway.

And yes, most definitely: movie file should be in identically/properly named sub-folder within a master Movies folder. Following this convention yields near perfect result in media identification. Every shortcuts to this goal lower the batting avg.
