I'm looking at installing Emby side by side with my existing plex to test out the waters initially.  Pretty much no choice...perturbed to say the least over the latest plex shenanigans and have a family of 60yr olds down to toddler that can't find their normal shows without difficulty now.  Enough said though about tyranosawusleavingplex.

What I'm really wanting to know, seeing as the timing seems...fortuitous given the recent 3.6 beta release, is whether it's worth it to install the 3.6 Beta now and deal with any upgrade pains later when the full 3.6 release hits, or should I just wait for the full 3.6 release?

Anyone know how long until the full release hits?  I don't see any sort of release schedule in here, but maybe my search foo is bad.

Any of you long time Emby users been through the upgrade process from beta to full release?  Is the full release usually significantly different from the beta?

Thanks!

Very personal opinion, just as a user, I'd probably go for the beta. Its been quite a while since the last stable release and the beta contains quite a few improvements, which at the same time have been in beta for a while so should hopefully be quite stable, so the jump from the existing beta to the next stable should I imagine be quite small.

Probably best not to fling every library you've got at it though, add a few smaller bits to Emby and check it does as expected finding metadata and whatever.

Also check out the wiki especially regarding naming and maybe options as to where you want metadata etc stored, which metadata providers to use, who gets access to what, etc.

Finally, preferably wait to get other peoples opinions, hopefully including the odd developer or two, as I have been known to write complete rubbish  :)

As someone who has also moved from Plex, my advice is to put everything in and then go through and check your file names match the conventions on the wiki. Plex was a lot more forgiving when it came to file names and folder structure and I found I had to rename quite a few files.

When I switched 4 years ago, I had to redo my entire tv shows directory structure and filenames. It was a pain at the time but it was soooooooo worth it. I later had to redo my movies as well but in the end, my library scans were a lot faster.

I didn't care about the restructuring because it was my own laziness and Plex let me get away with it.

The only complaint I had back then was with Plex I was able to have tv episodes on multiple drives so I didn't have to spin up every drive on my server. At the time, Emby couldn't do that, you would end up with multiple listing for each show. They have since added that feature but I haven't looked into it yet.

We are getting more forgiving with each new release. Thanks.

Thanks,  I think I should be good there.  I already have all my TV shows in "/TV/ShowTitle/Season#/ShowTitle_S01E01.ext" format.

I just switched from Plex to Emby and I didn't have to change any file or folder names except for a few multi-part movies.

Thanks for the feedback ! If you have some before and after examples we'll be happy to look at them and see if we can get them supported.

The files were named 'Movie Name (date) - part x'. I changed them to 'Movie Name (date)-partx'.

They might have worked as they were, but I only had three or four so it didn't take long to change them.

With the original naming scheme you would have run into issues as " - " is used for the multi-version naming scheme.

I ran into the drive-spanning problem too, last time I tried Emby. Happy to say it mostly works great now, minus a few quality-of-life issues.

My file naming issues were also due to laziness and Plex being forgiving - if anything, I'm glad Emby's made me clean up my files and folders a little bit.

It's funny, at first I was annoyed. I was like "WHY DO I NEED TO CHANGE MY FILES!!!???? I WANT TO DO WHAT I WANT!!!!"    4 years later, soooooo happy I did it. My movies, I didn't have them saved in folders. I had all movies in the root of my Movie folder. My Scans took forever! I used a utility to create folders and move the movies to the folders. My scan went quickly and now my nfo and artwork are saved inside the folders. Nice and organized and if I ever have to leave Emby, it will make it easier to transition already having all the metadata and artwork.
