Need clarification regarding watching channel currently recorded

If I set to record a show, and while that show is being recorded, switch to the channel, I don't have the ability to rewind to the beginning of the show.  I have to start watching that show as a recording, not from the guide.  Is that normal? 

 

With usual DVRs, if you switch to the show you are recording, you basically start watching the recording.  

 

Besides not being able to rewind, another annoying side effect of this is that I can't use the previous channel button during watching a recording.
